    Can't handle the heat?

    Basic Info:
    • 940xm OC at x24 on all cores
    • 970m with slv bios
    • 240 PSU
    • 27'' 2k monitor
    Without "central pin trick":
When oc CPU with TS and gaming, GPU is not working at full clock speed but ~900mhz. But the Temp of GPU is pretty stable under 80.

    With "central pin trick":
After plug-in the left-angle connector, I am able to run both CPU and GPU at full speed all together. But the GPU got too hot, it keep run at 1035mhz all the time, and after play GTA5 for like 20mins, it reached 85 degree and forced to throttle to 405mhz to cool it off. Also, the left-angle connector got super hot.

Do you think there is any suspicious point, such as fan, thermal paste, driver, connector etc.?
Or just everything is fine, and that's how far the M15x can get, without any cooling mod.

    Thanks.

I heard 970M ran cooler than 7970M so that does sound a bit hot. Could be thermal paste application. Really though the cooling system on this laptop does need improving.
I run my cooling mod on all the time the laptop is powered on. Can you not set power/temp targets in nvidia inspector?

If the right angle connector is getting hot to the touch, that's not a good sign. It's probably drawing current past its specs and heating up. This could potentially be dangerous. Perhaps these adapters are not designed to handle current past a certain amount of amperes. Maybe some adapters are built with thicker conductors allowing more current to flow than others. Not sure about this, and I don't think I've seen any of these adapters with specs as to how much current they can handle.

This is a good point. Well worth noting and testing.

When I see a worthy game I will put my 180W adaptors together and dial up to 240W and beyond and see if the angle adaptor can take the punishment.

M15x GPU cooling system can handle 970M. I would recommend looking at your thermal pad placement and do a repaste. Running a 680M OCed to 930/1100 and playing GTA 5 for hours on end got it up to around 90C without throttle. No extra cooling.

970M certainly runs cooler especially at stock. The cooling was never designed for 100W (or 120W) MXM GPU's. The M15x came out at the time of the 5870M. 75-80W was max TDP for high end cards then. Hence only 2 heatpipe and small fin array.

Therefore modern high end cards push the system to its limits and unfortunately easily beyond.

This is why I am waiting for Pascal with the hope we can have a 75W GPU with the performance of the mobile 980!

I have seen videos on youtube with 980ti running with a i7 920 at 3.8ghz. This is comparable to the best 920/40xm's. The chip does well for it's age and for the most part doesn't bottleneck. If it does bottleneck then we can simply downclock the gpu at 1080p and enjoy even cooler temps...

I suspected the thermal paste the first time. I got the liquid ultra one and it really thin. The first time I applied it to my CPU, my CPU is getting so hot with just mild OC.
I guess something wrong with the thermal paste and maybe because it is thin there is still some gap between the cpu and heatsink.
So I got two more package and added more of them to both my CPU and GPU. CPU temp get much better after.
Any suggestion on which will be the best thermal paste for m15x?

Regarding the nvidia inspector, I didn't manually change anything in it, it runs with the default setting of power/temp. I remembered I did lower the power once to see how the heat will be affected. I don't remember see huge different for that. Any other suggestion?

Yeah, it does get pretty hot and you can hold it for more then 5 secs (the metal part).
I got it from ebay for like 5 bucks, I don't know is there ways to find better build adapter.

I started out repasting my M15x with Arctic Silver on both my 920xm and 680m, but had MUCH better temps using IC Diamond paste. If I remember correctly, the price was about twice as much but significantly brought down the temps for both my CPU and GPU.

Indeed. I ran out of the stuff and used MX-4. It is much newer stuff but utter crap in comparison.
