I have seen several listings from seemingly decent sellers of M15X on eBay. The feedback scores and responses seem to suggest fair practices. What could possibly be a problem with buying one of these systems? I could live with a scratch/dent situation, even though most sellers claim that they are like new, and have "factory" warranty, and that it can be extended as well. Is this possible? (to extend thru Dell?)
What am I missing here? Are these sellers authorized to sell in this manner? Seems a great savings over a new unit direct from Dell. Would like to hear from anyone with input about the good/bad of this type of purchase. My cash is hard earned like most of you......Thanks tons...good forum! And also: How do I determine date of mfg?

Tag number ascertains exact date of manufacture. It's Dell's version of a serial number.

There's no reason you cannot transfer ownership, and therefore transfer warranty, and in turn extend it.

Like all things eBay, the usual caution should be applied.

That's pretty much it, if you get something you didn't pay for then you're covered by eBay's protection policy.

I was selling the refurbished M15x on ebay as well but I had to cancel the listing because I have to be away. If you're interested, I can work a deal with you at NBR and I can sell it at a price lower than if it's on ebay since I won't have to pay the ebay's seller fees. I've owned 2 dell refurbished laptop myself and as far as I know they are perfectly functional and their cosmetic conditions are the same as brand new and when I inspected the internal components there's not a single dust: the history of your refurbished laptop is somewhat mysterious but they're mostly customer returns due to minor issues.
The kind of warranty that you get is explicitly stated to be the same as a purchase of a brand new version. The ownership is transferable like jarmeister said. By the date of mfg you mean the date when the warranty begins? It shouldn't matter as long as you know when the warranty ends. But you can get the date of mfg at dell's website if you know the service tag.

i have sold multiple refurbished systems and personally own a couple of them and had no issues. 1 yr warranty direct from dell and you can extend them as well. You missed out when i had 2 i7 m15x with 1080p FHD and Ati 5850 for under $1250. Either way pick one up from dell outlet or get them on ebay but verify the sytem tag has warranty left on it and if it is refurbished direct from dell than you will be fine incase of any issues warranty will take care of it. You can get it extended before it runs out or as soon as you get it but keep in mind the warranty is much higher after the purchase versus buying direct from dell at the time of the purchase.

My M17x and M15x were both eBay purchases although not refurbished just sold by their owners. The M17x did not have the original CPU but a Q9100 ES instead, the M15x came with everything it was originally shipped with except the ball cap. I have had both warranties transferred and extended w/o a problem. Neither is configured as they were shipped not with the M15x now sporting an i7 920XM, 128Gb SSD (soon to be an Intel 160Gb SSD) and Blu-Ray drive, the M17x is as listed in my signature but a 256Gb SSD will replace the 160Gb shortly.

got mine for a song and dance came with 720qm and 260m which were made redundant after a few months. Was not passing mats test on video and was sold as a second a quick bios update to A07 and all was fixed. The only thing is no warranty but meh.....for the price I purchased it for I'm not fussed.

A factory refurbished item generally cannot be distinguished from new since it was usually a piece of hardware that failed, i.e. RAM, GPU etc. If truly done by DELL it will be as new though there are things which may not accompany a refurbished PC like the hard bound manual, ball cap, pc sleeve etc. If something is not listed it would be in your best interest to ask for photos of what is included and verbiage of what is as well.

If you buy from Dell Outlet Shop it is completely refurbished, ie they fixed or replaced defective parts that may have been reason for return OR they are just returned new because it wasn't what the original purchaser had wanted.

They all carry warranty from Dell so its a no brainer if you want to pick up as they would say an Opened Box item at a good discount.

    well thats kinda weird
so dell also sell refurbished alienware and even give warranty on it like brand new??

but are there any particular difference between brand new and fr ?
maybe like different kind serial number ?
maybe different kind of box ?
maybe different in box stuff ?

my friend told me that electronic that already been repaired will not be the same as brand new

so i am kinda confused now
if i choose the brand new one with hefty price, i dont want to be fooled and get a refurb one

    pls help

    thank you very much

Refurbished PC's, laptops and hardware for them are sold by DELL through the DELL Outlet. You have to look at the description of what comes with the product and if it is Certified Refurbished, Previously Sold as New (this means it was returned but reason is not given) and Scratch and Dent this is how they are listed in the Outlet and you can do a search eliminating one, or more, of the fields like Scratch and Dent may not be what you are looking for so you would tick Previously as New and Cert Refurb etc.
