    Guys!!!

phew!....it's too hot here in India right now @45c
and the most sad thing is that i think my m15x's fan's are screwed up i mean they work but even after reaching the max temp of CPU @ 74-76c
the fan's won't shoot up to max speed i always have to get to Hwinfo and set them to max...is this normal about the temps and fan working?

the most imp thing is that previously i used Hwinfo's fan speed control and as you know it says "Try at your own risk "...does that mean if we use it does it screws up your fan mechanism??

and the third thing is ,any one out there please help let me know how does the M15's fan's work?

most the time i am at 40s
hwinfo32 reports around 2000rpm at those temps.
and it jumps to 2700 rpms around 60c..
    these temps are for CPU.

i am currently and 51c and its reporting 2700rpms

hmm...but here room temp's are too high so my idle temps are 58c when airconditioned its around 47-55c!!

but my worry is only about the fan speed its 3300rpm now @ 58c!!

I actually found an incredible revelation: my fans don't operate at the same speed or loudness as my brothers! But I have auto fan control on and they are:
    30-2000
    50-3000
    55-4000
    60-5000
for the CPU and similar for the GPU. Works well and my 3000rpm setting is really quiet I had hardly hear it.

    you see 4000+rpms?
which software are you using, even with hwinfo32 if i set my 7000rpm it doesnt go more than 4600rpm on cpu and 5200rpm on gpu?

the laptop is on the bed and the laptop is suffocating even though CPU temp is 49 fan is at 3300.

Shouldn't have the laptop on the bed. Wow your GPU fan is fast! Go to techinferno and visit their forums. You will find the newest version of HWInfo there.

ok. i think i understand why my i see these rpms on my fans its an air resistance thing.
when the laptop is on the bed not much air is being sucked, not much resistance on the fan, when properly vented, more air is sucked, more resistance!

What are your rpms at those temps? (Without manual fan control) As long as you have no problematic temps there's no need for the fans to run on full speed, 75°C isn't that hot.

No, it doesn't screw up your fans, the warning is mainly there because if you set the fan manually to a low speed and then forget to adjust it before gaming or similar your system can become really hot (~110°C CPU or more for example) before it shuts down automatically. Such temps are not very healthy for the components even though you probably won't damage them (as they power off themselves before really high temps are reached)

It's PWM controlled afaik, the red cable is +5V, black is ground, blue is probably the PWM signal and yellow the tacho signal. I'm not sure about the 5th cable though... if somebody knows this for sure let me know. Maybe it's a temp diode.

The temp data gets processed and according to this the fan speed gets set via PWM. There's a temp/rpm table in the BIOS, the EC controls the fan if I'm not mistaken.

    That's totally normal.

My wife likes to use her Dell XPS laptop in bed (it has an i7 processor and dedicated video card), and noted that the bottom gets hot and the fan runs a lot. I'm getting her a board to put it on so as to increase survival of the electronics.

Putting a lappy on bed is really bad. I had seen smoke coming out of a lappy which was used on bed literally.

I did that once. Never got as far as the board. First thing I knew about it there was a small wisp of smoke snaking across the screen and the laptop never worked again (obviously)...

    :(

I now have a bit of a paranoid phobia of sofas, beds and carpets around my computer.
