Is it possible to put an i7 2820QM in an M15X? I looked around and could not find much information. I believe they both use PGA988 sockets.

No, you can't. The M15x uses first gen i core processors, the i7-2820QM is a second gen core i processor.

You can tell which is which by the model number.

First gen i core have 3 digit model numbers

Second gen i core have 4 digits, and always a 2 as the first.

Third gen i core also have 4 digits, but the first digit is always a 3.

I know the difference in the models, but I was more wondering about compatability in actual sockets. I can worry about modded BIOS later. I am more wondering if, even thought he pin count is the same, are the paths the same? IE Are the pins in the same place as they are on 1st gen?

socket sizes are different, sandy-bridge is 1155 and the first gen i-7's are 1156. this means they won't fit :(

    So models that u can use is actually range from : i7 620, 640, 720, 740, 820, 840, 920 and 940

all models that got number "2" in front is sandy bridge model which is newer model and not supported on M15X board...

Btw, since u r running 620M, so is the dual GPU worked well together? or u only use the ATI?

That is correct otosan but be careful not to confuse the desktop i7 920 with the mobile i7 920xm ;)
Also the M15x doesn't benefit from the graphic switching so the iGPU is never used in this system.

That's completely wrong! First of all those are desktop sockets.
Plus the first generation desktop core i7 socket is LGA 1366 ;)

    - mobile sandy bridge socket is 98 8B rPGA

-first gen mobile core i7 socket is 98 9 rPGA

Yes they are 988 A rPGA aka Socket G1.

Sandy bridge is Socket G2 aka 988 B rPGA.

my bad, guess I should double check before I start spouting stuff about processors, I just knew for sure that a 2820qm wouldn't fit. thanks for clarifying :)
