Just wanted to clear something up. I have got a dell 5870 in my M15X, I didn't buy it directly from dell, I bought it from a user on here I think. Is it covered by warranty or not?

    Thanks

I would think no because components are usually tied to the system they were purchased with for warranty claims. If the card was purchased separately from Dell, then perhaps yes, it could be covered; but since you didn't purchase it directly from their spare parts department, I'd think that you are out of luck. That, and the fact that Dell doesn't support the 5870 in the M15x.

Yeh thought so. Well thanks anyway. Anyone else know if it's covered if it was bought from dell because I can find out where the seller got mine from.

I guess regarding CPU/GPU nothing is covered unless it's a Dell part and exchanged by a certified service guy sent from Dell... usually that's the case, but I would have to look it up to be a 100% sure.

Of coure the 5870 is a special case because it's not officially available for this system... but I think what I wrote above applies.

If the card was bought from dell I guess it would carry some sort of warranty. Atleast in denmark you have 2 years to complain about malfunctions on any product you buy (by law).

So it might not be covered by your systems warranty, but I guess the card would carry its own.

Yeh that's what I thought because the system came with a 5730 but the card must have it's own warranty if it was bought from dell spares.

I just bought a new 5850 from Dell, they wouldn't sell me a 5870, I tried. However the "new" card comes with a 90 Warranty, and then it is covered under your systems remaining warranty. So if the card is purchased direct from Dell, it is covered.

Why wouldnt they sell you a 5870? Because its not officially supported by your rig?

In Andre56' sig it says that he has a 5870 from dell, so obviously they must sell it, unless he bought it from someone who tore their m17x apart :p

Yeah, because it isn't available for the mx15. I then told him that it was available for the mx17 and he said he didn't have it available. So after a bit of haggling and getting free shipping I just bought the 5850. I know they can sell it but I think that it may have taken more coercion to get him to do it.

Yeh if you tell them you have an M15X they won't sell it to you because they don't have it for the M15X but then again they won't sell it to you without a technician fitting it so telling them you have an M17X doesn't really work either. As Kratzen said I bought mine from someone who parted out their M17X.

Actually when I bought it, I asked about a tech putting in for me and they said that I would have to install it myself, and that tech support could guide me over the phone. The rep I chatted with, looked for the 5870 but couldn't find it. My guess was that because right now it isn't an option on the Mx17-R3 he looked there and couldn't find it. I think if he would have found it he would have sold it to me, maybe. He did say that Dell didn't recommend using mx17 parts in mx15's but he didn't say he wouldn't sell me the parts, only that he couldn't find the part I was looking for.

Oh I see, well when I rang the R3 wasn't out and they insisted they would have to fit it themselves which makes sense as they wouldn't be able to ensure the warranty if you fitted it yourself.

1 11725 Warranty Longer of 90 Days or Remainder of System Warranty/ Svc Contract. 21 Day Return. Parts may be Reconditioned.

I copy and pasted that from my order confirmation. The rep also said it would be covered under my current warranty (expires in 153 days, I have Square trade for another 3 years on the Alienware, not as good but dell wanted $700 to extend my current warranty 2 years, and square only wanted 279.99 for 3 years with ADH). Any way, maybe because mine was purchased through an employee purchase program at work, and our IT dept normally does upgrades, they didn't require it. I don't know.

I just looked and you are in London, could it be a difference with American and Dell Europe's policies?
