I'm having an issue where certain CDs won't play or allow me to do anything with them on my Alienware. I'm in the process of converting a CD collection to mp3 and this has happened two or three times now, so I know it isn't a problem with a certain disc. The CDs were brand new just out of the shrink wrap.

When the CDs are put into the drive itunes recognizes them and brings up the track names and artists etc but then when it comes to actually importing them it estimates a time and will take forever. It sat on one track for over an hour and only claimed to have imported half of the track.

When I try and play these problem CDs it just makes stuttering sounds. It is infact the audio from the CD but as if it's been cut up with second long pauses between each second of audio. I get this same problem in itunes, VLC media player and WMP.

I posted it here because I think it could possibly be a drive problem? as these CDs play flawlessly in the Dell XPS 15 sat next to it.

I don't understand how it can be a dirty lens as it'll rip some but not others. I can rip 10 CDs and come back to the problem CD and it will still have issues. But if it's definately a faulty drive, well I still have over two years left on my warranty.

Some CDs are of a higher quality than others. The lower quality ones are tipping your drive over the edge.

It's undoubtedly a fault with the drive, clean it or replace it.

I had a drive that slowly stopped reading discs, and I was fearing that I was going to have to replace it. I spent hours and hours searching for drivers to try and see if it was a driver problem. I uninstalled its drivers, reinstalled new ones, etc. Finally, after exhausting all options, I ended up grabbing one of those duster cans I had laying around and carefully I sprayed it around inside my optical drive. Guess what? It worked. My drive was just dusty :p Try either doing what I did, or buying one of those disc eye cleaners.
