My Alienware M15x is about 5 or 6 years old. I have taken pretty good care of it and never had any real issues. It doesn't even get overused for gaming as I have a PS3 and PS4.

I have started noticing the fans coming on full even when I am just surfing (its doing it now as I type),, even coming on by there self when the lid is shut. My temps look fine when I just ran CPUID,, only around 47, ,so what up with the fans and is it something to worry about??

played a game of footie manager there and the temps where 72 whilst running the match engine,,so perhaps it is a heat issue afterall. Will give it a good clean out and monitor after for a bit

Update to the latest A09 BIOS if you haven't done so already. What kind of CPU and GPU do you have? Try RealTemp to monitor your temps.

Hi there,, this is still happening,, I measured my temps off 2 different programs and got much the same. I dont think its overheating as when I opened it up and cleaned it wasn't even that bad. My temps gaming get up to 60 something and when idle or browsing they are in 40's.

    I have the Intel (R) Core (TM) i-7 Q740 1.73 GHz CPU with a Nvidia GTX 460M Version 353.62 plus 8gb RAM

How do you update the BIOS? I notice I am on A08???

Are you using chrome per chance? Turn hardware acceleration off in settings.

Do what fatboyslimmer recommended and turn off hardware acceleration. Your CPU is more than capable of handling online content, no need to use the GPU. This also applies to Firefox as well.

To update the BIOS, you will need a blank USB flash drive.

Download this (A09 BIOS from Dell):

    http://downloads.dell.com/bios/R293649.exe

Also download this (Rufus USB Boot Tool):

    http://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus-2.6.exe

    1) Insert the blank USB thumb drive.

    2) Run Rufus, and format your USB thumb drive. Make sure the right Device is selected (and of course make sure you don't have any data on the drive because it will be deleted). Make sure "Create a bootable disk using FreeDOS" is selected. Leave all other options alone.

    3) After the thumb drive is formatted, open R293649.exe. When it asks where to extract the files, choose the root of your thumb drive.

    4) Shut down the computer. Make sure you power adapter is connected. Never do this while running off the battery alone.

    5) Start up your computer and press F12 at the Alienware logo screen.

    6) Choose "USB Storage" from the boot menu list.

    7) At the DOS prompt, type "CD M15R1A09" without the quotes.

    8) Type "F" without the quotes and press enter.

    9) The rest will be automatic.

does updating the bios wipe my files or do I not need to worry about that?

whats the benefits to the new bios anyway?

No, a BIOS update will not affect your files, but you should always back up your data as a common practice. The benefits are bug fixes to initial BIOS releases that are fixed with new releases.
