    Hi all

Thought id give Far Cry3 a try today and even with all in-game settings to low Im only getting about 15fps.

Has anyone had any joy with it with a 460m?

    Thanks in advance

    Arabella

im getting around 20fps too when playing in 720p. apparently, drivers supporting it havent been released yet, so the game tries its best :)

For drivers, nvidia users use: 310.64 BETA drivers, up to 38% improvement on 600 series cards. Should help with older cards too for far cry 3. Do note these drivers seem to make other games run bad but if you want to try far cry 3, those are the drivers to use.

ATI users: 12.11 Beta8 drivers are the best for far cry 3.

    I've got a 460m and I'm getting 40fps 1920x1080, medium-high settings.

Can't wait to get my 7970m.

At OP you should easily be getting over 15fps, check your gpu to see if it heats up too much or throttles. Also toggle stealth mode.

I just tweaked settings to max once more so SSAO, max render distance and max frame buffer and the stuttering has gone and the game looks perfect and runs butter smooth. Now I can enjoy this game properly!

    Settings are 920xm @ 23/23/25/27 and 7970M stock clocks @ 0.98.

Its quiet odd - I seem to get about the same fps regardless of settings - hig/med or low, dx9 or dx11, Always starts in 20s and gradually decays to single digits.

    Thanks

I'm running a 460m and just tried out the game for the first time. Didn't have too much time to tweak settings but I tried a couple things. I got it running fairly smooth at med to high settings. I am overclocking though, my gpu temp got up to 91c while playing. That's the highest it's ever gotten with any game. Is that really bad?

play it on dx9 - i'm getting about 20-25fps at 720 with everything on ultra - but on a GTX 260M (and the new beta drivers didn't make much difference, it was already smooth before that)

So weird. I'm playing on dx9, everything set to low and have dropped the resolution, yet I still get a maximum fps of 25 fps.

    Computers are mad!

Thanks all for suggestions and comment

Something is definitely wrong. I have the same set up as you. I'm playing with dx11, with medium to high settings and I'm getting 40-50fps

Have you checked your vents? Maybe dusty? If your GPU is overheating fast then it will throttle which would explain the slowing frame rates.

Yeah If they are clogged then your gpu cooling fan cannot effectively carry the heat away from the radiator. Open up the back and take the gpu fan out. It is really easy (just 2 scews and then unplug from motherboard\) then you can really get at the dust sitting blocking the airflow. A can of compressed air here is very useful as well as a fine small brush (such as found with electric shavers) also hold the fan still with a finger and blow air through it to clear out dust there too.

You could go further and repaste your 460M. That might also lower your load temps considerably if you use a high quality paste such as ICD 24.

The first things I would check if I were you - Stealth mode on? That causes problems with all games - kinda obvious but you might not know about it or sometimes realise it's on (the led difference is slight at best)..

Check your driver settings - do you have antialiasing set to 16x or something? that would kill the framerate!

Also have you updated to the newest version? It should happen automatically but if not check around for an update ;)

Use GPU-z to check your temps - if they are above 90 then you definitely have a fan problem (dust as suggested).. Unlikely though since you'd notice that your machine was noisy all the time..

    Good luck!

Thanks all - I wasnt brave enough to take the fan out but i took the back off and blew through the fans and vents and its made an AMAZING differance. Now getting a steady 30fps on med/high and dx11 settings.

    Love you all!

My GPU gets up to 90 degrees with FarCry 3, do you think that's damaging?

I also get 90~ gpu while running it OCed, when I play at stock clocks it runs at about 70~ but I still have the same framerate. I guess the game is somewhat poorly optimized as it is.

Just curious what frames are you getting with FC3 maxed out? 60 FPS consistently?

Yeah although I cannot usually OC the CPU at all above 15x - 17x as throttling occurs. However sometimes no throttling occurs even at 23x. This is with GPU at stock as this is enough for max settings with around 60fps.

It is just plain odd. As it doesn't throttle all the time I think there are factors we haven't yet identified fully here in the community with this issue.

How you are faring onego? Any issues if you OC cpu?

With the GPU at stock clocks, throttling occurs randomly if I were to overclock the CPU above the 15x multiplier. There were times I tried to OC it to 24x and the game was running smooth for 10 minutes before it throttled suddenly out of the blue.

I'm getting pretty low FPS on FC3 with the 7970m on "very high" settings, roughly 20-40 depending on what I'm doing. This seems odd with the results others are getting on this thread, does anyone have any suggestions?

Strange. Try the Nvidia BETA Drivers. I have version 310.70. Playing on Medium/High. Make sure dynamic lighting and shadows are on low. Works pretty well for me. Geometry is also on low.

Lambda. Try windowed mode at 1920x1080. I find on full screen mode the game throttles almost no matter what. However when windowed FC3 runs much smoother and doesn't throttle.

You can install the optional 'enable tagging' feature for Ziggys Mod to make it a bit easier though. I will try it without first.
