    Hello,

I have swapped out the old i7-620m for a i7-920xm. I have been careful with thermal paste (akasa 455) and tried two different techniques of application however I am getting quite hot temps:

Maxing out at about 87 degrees Celsius on all four cores.

I am using hwinfo64 with a custom curve to ramp up the fans to 4500 at 70 degrees Celsius but was curious if there was something I am missing in the process I am doing ?

    Any suggestions please ?

The 920xm has a TDP that is 20 watts higher than the 620m (55 watts vs 35 watts iirc.) If it’s maxing out at 87 on all four cores, that’s not really too bad and I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m not too knowledgeable on the M15x, but there may be a better heatsink you can buy which may help you lower the temps.

Those temps are pretty typical for this cpu, just remember that with turbo that tdp is going to be higher than the 55w it is rated for until it starts to thermal throttle a bit. Most people end up having some trouble with the mxm with this machine for the usual reasons.

I agree - these temps are pretty typical. Better paste will help, as noted by Papusan above. ThrottleStop (see that forum, thanks to UncleWebb), can help prevent throttling by undervolting. But the 920xm and 940xm run happily with temps in the 90's.
