Hello again guys. I'm running a 5850m in my laptop, and I've noticed it downclocking itself from time to time. Some days it is not a problem. I have tried messing with the clock settings and it doesn't seem to matter whether I have it on stock clocks or ramp it up to just under 800 core. I have tried toggling stealth mode on and off and that rarely seems to help. I have tried pulling the power cord out a little and putting it back in all the way and that helps sometimes, but it often just downclocks itself again. I have this problem whether or not my CPU is overclocked, too. When I do have my CPU overclocked, I only put it at 24x at 85 amps, 62 watts.

Do you think the problem GPU is dying or maybe I need a better PSU (& pin mod?) or maybe it's something else?

PS. The GPU stays under 70 for the most part even when overclocked to 720 core, so I don't think overheating is the culprit.

I bought a new PSU from Amazon. I went with a new 240 watt M17X one. So far, my gpu has been MUCH more stable. It still throttles from time to time, but it's pretty rare now and only lasts for a split second. I have an adapter coming in any day now. I'll do the pin mod and let you guys know if that solves remaining throttling. I suspect it will. :)

If it keeps throttling, try another trick:

    1) Enable Stealth Mode
    2) Disable Stealth Mode
    3) Restart

Even with the pin mod my 7970M (now dead) used to throttle. I tried the stealth mode toggle and it pretty much solved throttling issues. It's a pain to have to restart but it worked for me.

I wrote that I had messed with stealth mode in the first post. Restarting didn't help either. I think my old PSU was dying. Now the throttling is so rare I mostly don't even notice any problems with it. I haven't tried gaming on stock clocks since I got the new PSU, but I bet the throttling is even less noticeable. Before, I could mash the stealth mode button and get stock clocks to work for a second, but they would soon go back to 300 on core and I think it was 500 on memory if I am remembering that correctly. Anyway, I'm happy that it seems to have been sorted out. :) I want to save up for a better GPU one of these days, but my overclocked 5850M actually does pretty well considering its age.

oops, sorry about that, I must have spaced out :). Anyway, the right angle adapter with the pin pulled should definitely solve any further issues.

Yeah, it's okay. I hope I didn't sound annoyed. My battery will hold a charge now, too. :D It hadn't held a charge for the last two years.

As predicted, pulling the pin solved the remaining throttling issues.
