So I recently bought an Alienware M15x off ebay for about $400 (Specs Listed below). I want to upgrade the GPU to a gtx970m. Would this be the correct GPU? ( EBAY Link). What else would I need besides the GPU/Thermal paste to get it up and running? Also, will it work with Windows 10 or will there be driver issues?

    Specs:
    Model: Alienware M15x
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64
    CPU: i7 740QM
    RAM: 6GB DDR3-1333 Hynix
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 260M
Storage: 1TB Sandisk ssd (Originally had a 500GB seagate HD but upgraded to a SSD yesterday)
Battery: Orignal 9 Cell (35% wear) Holds charge around 1 1/2 hrs

You will need a set of Nvidia drivers with a modified inf file so they will install. I think if you search here, you will find a link (under 970m). The install is fairly straightforward - but you do need to pay attention to paste and contact with chips. I converted mine (see sig) and, with the 940xm, it reaches 6000 on Firestrike. I think there may be modified inf files on techinferno.. This is a much better upgrade than the 980, since the latter takes too much power and runs hot.
    Good luck,

    J

Before I install the driver/card. I have to uninstall the old drivers first right?

Yes. Uninstall the drivers normally then use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

K thanks. Just needed to make sure it was the same process as what I have done on my desktop. Now when i use DDU, the screen wont be black right? I have no Display port cords/devices that use that port.

I having a hard time finding the drivers/modded inf files for the m15x. Care to point me in the right direction?

I tried this one but every time I launch it, the Program says it cannot find the hardware. So I look inside the device manager and it shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" under the Display Section. But when I go and try to manually make my own inf file. It moves to other devices and fails to install driver.. I tried to download the files off techinferno, but it keeps telling me I dont have permission to view the attachments. (almost like they are trying to make me pay...) I just want working drivers.... 8(

Can you link me to working drivers? techinferno makes me have to wait a week just to upgrade the account in order to even download... I dont have that time. I need to make sure my card works (or not so I can return it in time for a refund).

The error message is not telling you it cannot find compatible hardware, so you probably have not disabled driver signing. You are running Win 10 and I can't tell you off the top of my head what it takes to do this. A quick google search should point you in the right direction.

I did turn off driver signing and it still fails the same way. Mr fox's also fails on me. http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...d-for-alienware-and-clevo-mobile-gpus.772018/

Using the driver linked in the video does give me the "cannot find compatible hardware" error message. one one in the picture I linked was the one I made which made it get past that part, but fails to install driver even with signing off.( Here is my inf file) Should I be installing it in safe mode?

Mr. Fox's modified driver is only for the M18x R2. The M15x has a different system ID which is why it fails on your system.

I can help you with this, but not at the moment as I am at work. It is currently 11:17 EST as I type this. The one drive share isn't working for me.
