I currently have the 260m and only play League of Legends. I have issues with it constantly locking up which makes me have to hardboot. I am normally on skype and can still talk but the screen locks up on the game and I cant do anything and so forced to reboot and log back in. Sometimes the GPU will just fail and go black for a couple of seconds and then start working again and I am able to keep playing.

I have tried several different drivers and repasted and all the temps and things look normal. So now I am looking to upgrade the GPU and I am looking to do the best bang for my buck. I don't need to play max graphics on the new games and like I said I only really play League of Legends and that is all the time I really have to game anyway. I was hoping some of the experts on these things could point me in the right direction as far as what card I should get and about what price would be good and if there is anything compadibility issues that I need to keep in mind. I saw a 560m on ebay but it said that it was not compadible in the 15x or the 18x and I thought it was. Any help would be great!

i think 460m or 5870m are the best budget cards for m15x. they both have directx 11 support and can get them with GDDR5. also 560m is unofficially compatible, but requires some vbios tinkering

I agree with dovy, but stick with nvidia so you don't have to go through the trouble of purchasing and installing a new x-bracket. Take a look at the marketplace here before looking on ebay, you'll find better prices and communication. And ask the seller what machine they pulled the card from if you aren't familiar with vBIOS flashing.

What is the specific information that I need to know so that its "compatible" with the m15x. I know that several cards have been made to work and I feel like I have a decent enough handle on hardware to do most modifications plus people on these forums have great guides, I just don't want to buy something and then have to deal with it if it doesn't work. Thanks for the advice!! +rep

    What is your budget?

Also you would be very hard pressed to find a card not compatible with this machine

PS: If you want to go beyond 460/5850M then stick to amd cards. Recent powerful nvidia cards require vbios tinkering and are much more expensive.
AMD cards are plug and play and much cheaper.

Just read up about the well known gpu throttling issue this machine has and be prepared to do some voltage/clock speed tweaking to get it within throttle free specifications. EG 7970M stock 1.05V @ 850/1200. Stable in game at 0.925V @ 790/1325. This with 920xm running at 20/20/25/27 at 73w tdp. So plenty power still. 7970M = roughly 4x 460M power.

I managed to pick up a gtx 460m on eBay for £80 as an upgrade for my 260m earlier this year.
It was plug and play. Didn't have to change anything. Some games such as Hitman Absolution can be run on medium/high settings but I have issues with high temperatures so I stick to lower settings so it runs cooler.

Probably cheapest upgrade in performance unless you can get a bargain.

We officially support up to the 460m howver I´ve seen some success stories with the latest video cards. I would try to get something like the 7970 or 660m

There are also some MXM-A cards going around like the K2000M and firepro 4000M which offer lower power options.

What about the gtx570m? Will it work? Or you do need a driver mod?

Don't bother with it. Simply get a 6970M or even 6990M at that price. Much better.
