I just ordered a 5850 for my M15x. It will be replacing a GTX285m. Ive been told once overclocked, the 5850 will wipe the floor with the 285. I've looked at some benchmarks and it looks like the 285 is actually better in a lot of aspects. I was wondering if I made a bad choice.Which card is better and by how much? Thanks in advance

I have the same system as you pretty much, would you be interested in some benchmarks?

Absolutely. A lot of benches I looked up were really mixed. Every other one said the other was better by around 8-10%. I think that's pretty big. Some actual benches would be awesome.

Well I mainly play BC2 on this laptop, I have a few things installed (Splinter Cell Conviction, Fallout New Vegas, GTA IV, P4D2, Crysis 2, Crysis Warhead, and Portal.

Head over to here, MobileMe Gallery I have a ton of screenshots with fraps fps counter running.

is your 5850 oc'd at all? and are those screenshots all on the highest settings? I have a lot of the same games and my 285 seems to perform very similar if not better. Not all of mine are on the highest settings though. also what temps are you reaching. When playing crysis 2 on very high (not extreme) i get frame rates around 40-50 and reach around 96*

temps are about 75c max in bc2 (gets the gpu the hottest from my testing).
All games are at highest available ingame settings. For crysis 2 and warhead I use custom config that's pretty decked out. In Bc2 I use 4xMSAA. I use AA whenever possible hence why you see the fps in the 30's. Overall its VERY playable.

edit: also those crysis 2 screenshots with the following config.

The 5850 will be a lot quicker. The 285m can do about 7500 GPU points in 3dmark vantage overclocked if you are lucky. The 5850 can to about 10k GPU points. Plus it is DX11 and future proof. There is tonnes of overclockability in the 5850.

You will not regret installing the 5850, performance wise and bang for buck you won't go wrong.

In some photos you'll see an OC of 700 on the core (that's the highest i've taken it with modifying the BIOS). If you don't see the GPU Core Clock on the top left side, than I wasn't running it overclocked.

edit: i'll add this, I have a fantastic gaming desktop so i'm used to all the pretty graphics which is why I max out all games on the m15x. The other day I disabled MSAA in BC2 completely via the .ini file and I gained 20fps in some places. I'll have to do more testing since I have an issue right now where BC2 will randomly lock up on me at times (only game that does it).
