Yes the M15x is capable of outputting surround sound, but surround sound in gaming headphones is just a juke, headphones cannot properly emulate surround sound, becuase they CAN'T surround you lol. Just get a really nice pair of Stereo headphones and pick up a Zalman ZM-MIC1 High-End Microphone Attachment at Xoxide! this mike is insanely good I use it for video reviews, voiceovers, games, even skyping. Also many people have remarked on how good it sounds and ask me what kind of headset I have.... I tell them I don't have a headset!!!! I have a pair of audiotechnica headphones and the zalman mic, and it blows Gaming headsets out of the water!!!!!

EDIT: some really nice headphones are obviously Boise, Audiotechnica, Sennheiser, and Beats by Dre. Those would be my top choices.

I have the Razer Megalodons the are 7.1 virtual surround and have there own sound card and connect via usb this takes some load from the cpu as the headset's sound card processes the audio. Razer Megalodon - Put Sound In Its Place | Razer | For Gamers. By Gamers.™ |
virtual surround in head phones is actual meant to be better than real surround in headphones as it adds the correct sound effects to mimic a large environment.
Personally i love this headset the sound quality is good and the bass is impressive you can swap to stereo sound also, which does come in handy as some games don't sound so great with the virtual 7.1 also good for music, they are extremely comfortable even after wearing them for hours on end.
I often game using my home theater, yes real speakers provide better sound position but for a headset they do a good job and on some occasions i have been know to turn around to see whats behind me or outside my door as the megalodons are working their surround sound magic. Also the the best I've heard these headphones was when watching blu ray on my friends laptop with them the surround was simply amazing then. One bad point is the mic is very sensitive and takes some tweaking if you don't want people hearing static when you talk
G35 Surround Sound Headset these are also popular 7.1's. I haven't used them but am told the rock.

Yeah i'm using the razer megalodon for quite some time now too, it's sound and mic quality is really really good. But the 7.1 surround only works on selected apps and games, if not it will still work but the sound's really really hollow and echoing. However, my friend's using logitech G35 7.1 surround, tried it and it's really good too!

yeah whenever i get the hollow sound i just switch it to 2.0 it still sounds great.
you must listen to a blu ray with them, its insane how good they sound then.

I would recommend the Razer Megalodon, a bit expensive but GREAT sound and it has a built in sound card, so you can switch between 2.0 and 7.1 surround sound by click on a button. and you can adjust from which angle you more sound output!
EDIT: and they are so god damn comfortable!! and quality is great!

Finally settled on the SteelSeries Siberia V2,based on a wide range of positive reviews.Very comfy on the ears, but sound seems soft.So i plug it in my M15x & configure it to output 5.1,tested it in Crysis 2,doesn't seem to make a lot of difference,or am i missing something else which needs more tweaking?

I love my logitech G35. They have awesome virtual surround sound. Well worth the cost in my opinion.

This is from another Headset thread, it is probably the best/most researched investigation on headsets/phones that I've read, get ready for some insight.

An astro is a cheap alternative to using the headphone out on the m15x. Look into the Astro mixamp, it provides dolby headphone (sim 5.1 sound) and depending on the cans it does sound nice when implemented well.
I've had the G35s and the are very very bland. But I also use A40's + A30's (ps3/pc) and as of lately have switched soley to my hd555 with the soundstage mod.
