I recently ordered a 5850 from dell but they just called me up and told me they canceled my order due to lack of stock. They told me they wouldnt have any in for about a month. I did some browsing and saw a GTX470m. most of the sites I viewed benchmarks for it showed that it performs better than a 5870 while consuming just about the same amount of power. It also performs about 20% better than a 460m. I was wondering if this would be a good decision or not. and if my m15x could handle it. Thanks in advance

    Can an M15x even take a 470M???

Make sure it wasn't just a mistake. Another guy here was told they didn't have the 5850 but they would give him a 5870 instead, which was never offered with the M15x. In the end I think they sent him a 5730 or something crap like that.

    It's probably a 460M I reckon...

Its not from dell. I found a 470m on ebay and was wondering if the M15x could handle it. Its MXM3.0.b of course and should work. I just don't know if its a good decision or not.

Inap tried it a while ago, the card did work, but didn't go to 3d clocks. Can't give u the link to the thread atm, I'm writing from my phone... but if you search the forum for 470m you'll find it .

Since then driver support for the 470m improved, also the M15x bios has been upadted... so it may work now, but there's no guarantee of course.

Power consum and heat shouldn't be a problem, I have a 6970m in my system and it works great so far.

Well, then get the 6970m :D You can find the link to the thread in my signature.

But of course it would be great if someone would try the 470m again... it's a really powerful card as well.

Based on Inap's experience, I would start by assuming that the 470m will not work in the M15x. The 6970m is probably better anyway.

How much would the 6970m cost? I know some games are optimised to work with nvidia cards like crysis 2. The power consumption of the 470m is also less than the 6970. Another things is from what i read on the forums, their is a problem with the fans when using the 6970m. I would like to drop the card in, install the drivers and be done. I would rather not fiddle with such expensive cards.

I guess the 470m would require a lot more fiddeling since the footwork hasnt been done yet. Yeah Inap tried, but he didnt fully succeed.

The 6970 is confirmed to work, and the dell version has been confirmed to work 100% and be (almost) plug and play. All you have to do is put on the x-bracket. Now you just need to get lucky and find a rep that will sell it to you :)

Afaik the 470 costs more than the 6970 and according to notebookcheck its ranked 7 below the 6970..
But if you are an nvidia guy, just go for it

I actually was going to upgrade to a 5850 before i considered the 470m but the order was canceled.....or was it? Get this... Dell called me and told me my order was canceled for the 5850. My money was refunded and put back into my bank account. I figured I would called to back see if i could order a 6970m and told them that they had canceled my previous order. The lady pulled up the order info and said that it was already shipped. I didn't believe her until she then emailed me the tracking number and order info. So i just got a 5850m from dell for free.

I dont think I will be testing the 470m. Sorry everybody. Im not gunna pass up a free upgrade.

Maybe once i sell my 285m, ill put the $ towards the 470m and test it out.

What does a 470m cost? The cheapest I've seen was about 550$ if I remember correctly... and they seem to be pretty rare.

Good luck in case you try it!!

my 470m has a bad performance but still works hard
if 470m is struggling in game then 485m will not be very happy

288 cuda vs 384 cuda , this is unbelievable , too big difference
    hope 570m will be 336

either m15x or w860cu , upgrade GPU will be a very difficult thing
a overclock 470m help me use this machine untill the nv 785m / amd 9970m is lineup
