Hi All, I have recently purchased a Momentus XT SSHD from amazon in preparation for my m15x, which should be arriving in the next few days, I hope!!! I have heard that the m15x comes with a fully licensed version of power dvd (which is my preferred media software as vlc occasionally has issue with .mkv playback) and I am wondering if I can simply copy the program from the pre-installed OS to the new drives OS with it still working?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just not to sure on this....

    Thankyou

You could clone your current HDD and restore it unto the new one.

Though, I believe one of the DVDs that comes with your laptop carries what your looking for. If not, Im almost sure that its on the Dell site.

the dvd software should be on your resource disk.

for mkv i use the shark 7 codec for wmp, and it has work very well for me.

Dont forget to store the data from your old drive, on another media (dvd or external) and reformat the old drive so you can sell or gift it (you dont want to give away passwords).
I would not try to clone a hybrid from an HD, you dont write to sectors on a hybrid (cloning).
Since Power DVD isnt a Dell program, I havent seen it on Dell's site, look on the support DVD or here >> VLC Media Player, 100% Free Windows Media Player Download for PC
Of course let us know how your adventure goes. -h-

    Thanks for your replies.

@hub1100, I agree with you about restoring a system from an HDD to a Hybrid as the flash memory has to have specific sys data written to it permanently which could be an raise an issue when cloning. This is why I was curious about relocating the software without running into any licensing hiccups. Thanks for the advice! Oh I've got VLC already btw, who doesn't! It's a fantastic bit of software, plays more or less anything, although it has issues with mkv files sometimes and I don't want to mess about finding codecs (thanks anyways Inap)

@FirewaveZ / Inap, perfect! If it's on the disc then I can just do a clean install as I hoped too... Happy days!

    Rep to you guys :)

I use GOM Player, plays good for .mkv and other file formats. If it doesnt it will ask you whether you want to download the codec and directs you to the download page.

The Momemtus hybrid drive is £100 from amazon, the same price as a 60GB Vertex-2 - The question is whats more important to you speed or disk space?

If it where me I would get a 60-80GB SSD with an external HDD for my media, etc. Just use the SSD for the OS. As this is gaming rig you may want to have your favorite games installed on the drive as well to take advantage of the faster loading times (not in-game), and with many popular games now around 15+ GB (thinking of L4D after patch, WoW) then you should think about implementing a dynamic Steam folder between the external drive, or any other Server you use should you take this route. PM for a guide on how to do this if you want?

    Just my thoughts :)

Thanks for the helpful advice scarfaced. I have know someone who does something similar with his Steam folder, maybe its the same as yours? He basically tricks Steam to think its getting all the data within the folder when its not actually a complete copy of the original stored on the HDD.

This would be great as I use a media server at home and If I can do it over the network then that would be even better. I' will definitely PM you, many many thanks for the offer!

The momentus ssd section doesn't get permenantly written to. It just uses the space to store more frequently run/accessed files. I've seen no difference in ghosting vs reinstall and I reghost my system atleast twice a month. I know I have ocd!

I'm waiting like a vulture for SSD's to drop in price. Don't get too excited the performance spike with the momentus is only marginal.
