    Hi guys received my 7970m this morning. Installed and used Arctic silver 5 thermal paste and new thermal pads. Turned system on and installed amd crimson and all drivers for my card. Everything runs fine like it should until I try playing a game and then my system does auto shutdown. I'm still using my 150w psu. While I wait for my 180w which is on the way. Is it the psu that can't cope with the load and the system shuts down or is it something else.Tried launching BF4 and got to loading screen and then turned off. My specs are as follow;

    CPU: i7 820QM
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    WINDOWS 10

    Please help!

Hi, as soon as temp hits 84c it shuts down. Tried furmark and it shot up to 84c within 10 secs. Removed c clips from heat sink to make better contact with gpu and using new screws he led 3 times and still same thing. Only thing I can think of is trying 180w psu when it arrives in a few days.

Something is not right. Thermal shutdown is not good. Need better pads, diamond type paste, undervolted vBIOS, larger PSU

Have you observed how your thermal paste is spreading over the core? Did you file down the screw posts on the 7970m's x-bracket? Stock height on those brackets is too tall and the heatsink will not make good contact with the GPU core. Removing c-clips and new screws will not help if the screw posts are too tall.

If I push the posts down does the xbracket pop off? Second time I lifted gpu the paste wasn't spread more like a blob in the middle which got me worried and that's when I removed the c clamps and used different screws. Gonna open it again and take another look. I'm using 1mm thick thermal pads which the first time round wasn't making contact with the heatsink. Then I applied another layer which I thought was sufficient but who knows. Would it be better for me to use 3mm thick thermal pads?

A blob in the middle means the paste is not spreading. Too much paste to compensate for gaps is not a good idea either especially with a capacitive paste like AS5.

The screw posts are too tall on the stock 7970M x-bracket. They need to be filed down for use in the M15X. Using different screws with longer threads can lead to uneven pressure and a cracked die.

Ordered some diamond 9 paste. I'm going to file posts down and the screws I'm using are half the size of the original ones. I'll update once I've tried.

Finally got around to doing it. Removed card. Used hair dryer to loosen glue and removed x clamp. Filed posts down to same size as previous cards posts. Used diamond 7 thermal paste and new pads. Reassembled and touch wood all good upto now had system running around 1 1/2 hours now on furmark v1.17.0.0. Back to back. Gpu doesn't go over 62c. Only thing that's bugging me is the fps displayed it's showing max 19 fps? Sure something's wrong. Before I was able to play for example mw3 on high settings on my gt 240m without a problem and now I tried with the 7970m and even at high settings it feels very laggy. Checked to see if my gpu drivers are upto date and they are. Any help or advise guys would be appreciated.

Can't say for sure; it could be that the card had problems to begin with. These cards are supposed to shut off when they get dangerously hot to protect themselves, but there are other factors that can lead to failure like cracking in one or more of the solder points or a failure in other components on the card like the VRM section. Most of these problems can be caused by excess heat/poor cooling.

It is probably throttling. You need to do a center pin mod and it will fix that. Lots of info here about this but here's a quick link:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-m15x-throttle-the-final-solution.729756/page-29

    Check post 284 from above.

    Right angle adapter:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pwr-Right...402101?hash=item5675bb6235:g:9i0AAOSwpdpVbi0O

    In summary:

1- Turn off adapter warnings in BIOS
2- Pull center pin off of right angle adapter
3- Insert modded right angle adapter between laptop and charger for gaming
4- Remove modded right angle adapter for battery charging

Note: You may have to toggle stealth mode on and off and do a full restart even with modded right angle adapter. At least I did when I had my 7970m.
