If it's new it has to be formated.

The only time you need to supply a driver during an install is if you have a hardware raid set up. This is so that the drive can be seen through the controller in the setup process. What kind of system are you using? Do you know if you have a raid set up? If so, what kind of raid setup? (0,1,5 etc).

The drive will be formatted in the installation process - it has nothing to do with the driver.

I had the m17x r3 and the hard drive became unreadable. Dell installed another hard drive which when I installed windows didn't complete the installation. Sounds like you have the same problem. The driver that dell found for me was on the intel resource website. So you need to download the driver for your chipset. Sounds like you just got your computer so you should be able to call tech support and have them find the proper driver for you but i put a link to the intel laptop driver download page at the bottom. My computer wouldn't allow me to eject the windows install disc and use my resource disc so your going to need to download the driver on another computer and put it on a usb drive. When windows asks for driver install the driver off of the usb drive. Also you can't get the driver off of the disc and put it on a usb drive because windows won't detect that type of executable file.

I'm gonna guess that since Matty has a M15x, setting up RAID is not the issue. ;)

Load your Win 7 disk into the DVD-CD drive and reboot. At the boot screen (Alienhead logo) press F2 to enter the BIOS. Right-arrow to the Advanced Section and down-arrow to SATA Operation. Hit enter and select AHCI, and then F10 Save and Exit. The Win 7 x64 installation disk includes AHCI drivers, which should allow Win 7 to see and format your HDD. The Win 7 disk also includes the chipset drivers needed for the M15x.
