Hm... I'm in the UK too so I may be able to help you here. Seems a bit weak especially the graphics. See if you can find another model go for at least the 260m for moderate gaming and a 5850 for frequent gaming. CPU is alright though unless you do lots of data processing.

Not being in the UK, I can't comment on the price. If it's new, this could be a good place to start - that combination of processor and video card would be faster than a lot of standard laptops - and the m15x is solidly built and easy to upgrade. Depending on your interests, there are lots of options for CPU, GPU, RAM and hard disk upgrades - but you might want to see how you do before upgrading. You might be able to negotiate on the price, since the M15x is being discontinued. I wouldn't be afraid to have one, though - It has some disadvantages - weight, relatively short battery life - but it's well built - and, as I indicated, easy to upgrade.

    Happy shopping,

    Joe

I think the price for this system is pretty high cOnsidering it has the weakest card in the M15x line-up, only 900p and 4 GB Ram, only a DVD slot and a weak 6-cell battery.
OFCOURSE, it's a highly upgradeable system but why buy a new system that is more than a year old with it's technology? The price for some later upgrades can be used right now to but a solid system instead like a R3 or some Clevo system.
    Just my two cents. :)

    lol np
Thanks for the input guys, but to put the price into perspective... a base spec m14x in the UK is £1098
It's loads dearer than the US >.> :p
I've managed to negotiate the m14x down to £991... is that better value than the deal above?

Yes but you sacrifice upgradability. The parts are indeed faster even in the base M14x. If you are comparing specifically these 2 then go for the M14x. If you plan to use your laptop for a while then go with the M15x as you have a whole host of GPU's and CPU's, HDD's and RAM you can choose to upgrade to. You can't upgrade the GPU in the M14x. Also you must take into account portability.

Ok cheers. As long as the m14x will last me 2 or 3 years. I won't game that often.

Seems expensive to me, you could get much better specs on ebay for that money. I've seem some amazing second hand ones, in perfect condition, fully specced up go for around about the same price.

You could always phone the Alienware sales team up to try and get a decent deal from them? Theyve discontinued it now, so they will be looking to shift stock :)

You know what, you're right mate.

Since you know a lot more than me about this stuff, could I be really cheeky and ask you what you thought I'd be able to get for under £950?

    If so cheers. :)

Imo, if you are going to get the M15x, you should check out the Dell Outlets to see if they've got any equal/better deals.
The laptop may be off the Alienware/Dell site, but it's still out on the outlets.

I saw one in the outlets for 1500$ and it had 840QM, 5850, 4 GB ram, 1080p and 9 cell. Pretty good I think.
