I am getting an AW mx15 as a system replacement for my XPS M1640. I got an i3-370, 8GB of Ram, the 5730 Graphics card, everything is pretty much stock. I have been looking on ebay and have plans for a 720qm processor. I want to go ahead and upgrade the video card as well but I don't want to buy it from dell if I don't have to. What are my options? Should I wait a couple of weeks for the processor? For the SB AW to come out, so the price on the i7's drop some? I looked at rj-tech for a card, they have the 5870 but I hear there are compatibility issues.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

i dont really kno much bout rjs 5870 but their gtx 460m will fit if your up to buy it even tho most ppl will tell u the ati card are better. only problem u will have with that 460m is brightness control. u dont wanna buy dells 460m because it comes underclocked and also costs more. the cpu is plug n play so ebays a good place to look for your core i7 720qm. heres a good place to buy it

the rj tech clevo 5870 does work for the M15x, but it lacks a few options like power play and audio through hdmi. no power play means you have to under clock your card when not gaming, so the laptop doesn't run hot all the time.

why don't you like buying from dell? if your getting the replacement, why not just ask them to upgrade the card and you pay the difference. the dell 5850, i think is under $300 and is the same if not better then the clevo 5870. and you won't lose any features.

also another good place for parts is in the nbr market place. i haven't check there in awhile, but most of the time you find compatible cards there.

the marketplace from NBR and mxm-upgrade are possibilities to get GPUs. The 5870 should work but maybe you cant get audio via the DisplayPort then, cant remember. Depending on your location eurocom is also an option for GPUs.

There are also some i7 720qm on sale in the marketplace. I don't expect them to become cheaper because of SB as Sand Bridge uses a different mobo.

Imo you should go for a 5850 (overclockable to a 5870 and beyond) or a 460m... and you should get them from Dell...
Why don't you want the card from Dell?

Edit: Wow, got beaten by kurupt and Inap... I'm to slow :D

Hey I have a 720qm and GTX 260m lying around that I want to rid myself of. I am in the UK but I'm happy to do shipping provided it is paid for.

I have a bid in on ebay right now for a 720qm. If I don't win it, we can talk about me buying yours widezu69. Where are you GB? I have a good friend in Bristol area.

I just heard that the dell price for the 5850 was expensive.

The upgrade idea is good, I will ask if we can get it worked out, maybe it will be cheaper than buying one.

I will suggest it to my rep on Monday.

Well, I won the i7-720qm on ebay for 138.50 and 3.00 S&H. So I suppose I need to go and buy some thermal paste. Cause when I new computer gets here, I can change out the i3 for nice i7.

Can I sell the i3 370M that comes in the lap top for any thing? It is basically new. Would I do better selling on ebay or here?

How much can I ask for it? $75? or so?

Probably better selling it on ebay. People here always want better and I don't reckon the i3 will get much interest.

10-4 I would think most folks here would want something in the i7 range.
