    Hi lads,

I recently installed a 920XM and a 460m. No complains so far except the temperatures.

I have already applied three times new thermal paste to both of them, 2 times using AS5 and another one using MX4. I always clean very thoroughly the metal part and the heatsink and then apply a small rice grain size spot on the metal part of the chip. I got the best results with MX4 but still quite high, the GPU 46 C idle but 80 C on max load and the CPU 47 C idle, 79 max load. I have the 6 cell battery and I get a small improvement if I lift my laptop up. My ambient temperature is 22 C.

I dont put too much or too little thermal paste, just the right amount to cover most of the chip but still get high temperatures.

After I put the thermal paste I screw the heatsink following the numbers one by one but I don't press the heatsink against the CPU/GPU before start screwing, is this something that should be done?

Any other advice to take in consideration?

i dont really think that your temps are bad. those temps look good to me. my temps are abit better but i also have premium thermal pads on mine.

You should be worried about your gpu temps once the temperature goes over 90-100 degrees

Just keep the back of your laptop propped up. I'm pretty sure AS5 has a 200 hour cure time, so you wouldn't have noticed any immediate improvements in temperature with it. Its about time for me to repast too.

So you can use thermal pads on GPU along with thermal paste? Which pads are you using?

No I think Ldmoose is talking about thermal pads on the mem chips where the thermal pads should be. GPU and heatsink should only make contact with paste in between.

If u use a paste that has a cure time but you use it right away for gaming, can there be any side effects? Not curing correctly? I think I might have done this with my last repaste because I sort of didn't even know which thermal paste it was! Some computer repair gave it to me for free and it was some recognizable brand name that is effective. it has metal in it, so I think it might have had a cure time. I put it in and gamed right away and had way better temps than before, but the temps went up a couple of degrees as the week progressed and stopped.
