You can call Dell, they're still selling the cards. Otherwise check out the marketplace here, I think there's a 460m for sale.

I probably put the 470m for sale during the next days, I consider selling the 5850m as well.

Did you call Dell or Alienware? When I called Alienware about an upgrade for my 260m they offered me several cards... even the ATI 5730m :D

Don't know about the price yet, maybe I end up keeping it. First of all I want to sell the 470m. The 5850m is great for some benching fun, hahaha :D

Ok, I'll let you know in case I'm selling it. Anyway, there's usually a separate phone nr. for Alienware customers.

You know that the 6970m is an option as well? (inofficially... check the link in my signature)

No thnx i want something full support by the laptop, i dont feel for modding or anything like that just now and i will never give the right use to that much power either , since i have a desktop home with a hd6990 so this laptop is just for lan or some gaming when im out of home. so a 5850 or 460 will be more than enought for that kind of use.

If a 5870 from the M17x works with full support (I think it does in the M15x), then I have one up for sale at a good price. PM me if interested.

No, only the 6970m needs separate fan control (and only if it's not from Dell), not the 5870m.

No... the only fan issues are with 6970m cards which aren't made by Dell, thus you need software for an automatic fan control, works great. The Dell 6970m works perfectly fine without issues.

The 5870m, 5850m, 460m will just work fine, no matter whether it's clevo, eurocom, dell or whatever (just don't get an Asus G73 460m, that's a monster and wont fit, hahahahaha)

It needs to have Dell 5870m vbios A00 to work properly in the M15x. With A01, you get artifacts and other screen corruption. Otherwise, it works very well. If it has A01, it can be safely flashed back to A00.

great. I have the original A00 VBIOS so if anyone is interested, I can easily reflash it back to A00 spec.

Congratulations on your choice. A 5870m should crank up that M15x. Enjoy.

I think Inap also has a 460m for sale but I could be wrong if he sold it already.
If i didnt have to wait to get my 6970 from dell next month I would sell you my 460m at a crack head price. This option is still open if you want to wait a month

You can leave the current thermal pads on your heatsink, they will be fine. You'll need some alcohol (e.g. isopropyl alcohol) to clean the heatsink and the old card.
As long as the card comes with the proper vbios installed and you already have the latest BIOS on your system you'll be fine.

Uninstall your GPU driver before installing the card. Then use the latest Catalyst from AMD. Or the leaked 8.86 if you want... I got my best results with it.

You probably simply need to repaste it properly. I imagine the memory controller (MemIO) could be at the edge of the die, and sometime there's no paste there, which would explain the high temperatures.
It's normal that the MemIO is a bit higher, but not such a big difference.

Check out Inaps repaste guide: Download THERMAL PASTE GUIDE.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Make sure to clean the heatsink and die properly (use isopropyl alcohol or similar) and then apply the paste. Fix the screw in the correct order, there are numbers on the heatsink. AS5 will work fine.

Are these temps while playing a game or while idling? At these temps the fan is probably running at a pretty high level...

im using ati tools to test the card with a 3d artifacts finder so it use the card till 100% im using gpuz too check everything but is a bit weird is that if i strees the graphic card and the procesor together then the card dont even go over 75c memIO but if i just benchmark the card alone with ati tools then it gets to 86-87c o.0

first i had a gtx 240m that never pass the 73c then i upgrade to a gtx 260m that is much much hotter than the radeon 5870 and that one never pass the limit of 76c so i guess im doing something wrong because that temps are just to high =(

Yeah, believe it or not, those memory temps are somewhat normal if you're using the Alienware thermal pads. I would use .5mm thermal pads rather than the AW/260M ones. That way, the heatsink would be a bit closer to the die. When the heatsink is closer to the die, it forces the thermal paste to spread to more spots and increases the chance of it covering the memory controller part of the die (at the short ends of the die).

in the meantime, another approach would be to add more thermal paste to your die to compensate. Be careful not to put too much though.
