Is the core i3 good enough to handle web programming and a bit of photoshopping? A couple of full hd movies here and there.

The simple answer is that it's good enough. While having an i7 would help with the photoshop, if you can afford it, but it's not major in my opinion. It should definitely be good enough for movies & web programming.

There are cheaper options other than alienware that will perform those tasks you mentioned just as well. Going with an M15x might be overkill.

Putting an i3 in an Alienware is like converting a Ferarri to run on garden compost!

This is a very worthy point.

Yeah, the i3 will work fine, Photoshop would run better with an i5 or i7 but if you don't use it much it won't be noticable. I don't think it matters for the movies, they should run no matter what. Like the other two said though, there are cheaper options if you're not gonna use it for games. (Unless you just want to look cool.)

Bottom line: you won't notice a difference...period. Get what you can afford and don't worry about it. Now if Dell is giving you a good deal on a processor upgrade, then I'd think about it more. Also, you can always get a faster CPU in the future if you feel the current one is not up to par. An OEM Corei7-720qm can be had for ~$150 nowadays.
