I can't play any games smoothly after some time and it happened since few weeks ago. When the start of the game it would run as what one would expect but not till about 15 to 20mins of playing that the game will be very laggy. I noticed that my laptop was very hot at that moment too. Is that an issue with the graphic card? or other things that causes it?

PS: the laggy that i refer to is kind of fps spike? i guess:confused2:

At first update video driver or reinstall it. What GPU?
Download CPU-z and monitor temperature while gaming.

Sounds like a temperature problem - How long have you had your machine? These machines can suck dust in and get the cooling fins clogged. Compressed air (with the machine off) is usually a quick solution to that problem. Next step would be to log temperatures and see when and how hot it is getting.

If it was fine before, this should not be too hard to fix.

sounds like temps to me too, clean your fans and measure temps as said before. If the problem isn't solved with that then you will need to repast your gpu.

its gtx 260m , when idle the temperature will be around 50C, when i gaming it will reach 68C+. Is by installing new driver help with the fps spike? cause mine is quite an old diver. I had this machine 10months by now and i haven't been checking on the dust below the cover >.<

them temps seem ok,but still clean it i bet the temps are going higher while gaming if you haven't cleaned the fans in 10 months and yeah update drivers too and see if things get better, you really need to take time to do maintenance on your alienware more so than the average laptop.please clean it.xD

Well I hope you chose GPU to monitor maximum temp (2 clicks on shown numbers) and you played at least 15 minutes. Temps perhaps are fine for your lptop. Mine are 10C less each. Suggest you to use Nvidia drivers. Andyeah, clean your lappy if you can. Better to disassembly it. Only if it will not help... I would perform a clean Windows install.

if using gpu-z to monitor temps, ensure that you enable monitoring in background.
try making some gpu-z and throttlestop logs during a game session, try to replicate the problem and post the logs here.

    Hello,

I got the same problem. I also have Nvidia 260m graphic card. I cleaned my vans and laptop with air, there was some dust. But after it, it didnt get any better.
I also recorded the temp of my pc.

In chilling mode (not running anything) it was 61 degrees. When playing games, after 15 - 20 min the temp goes up to 91 degrees. I am kinda worried, cause this laptop costed me a fortune, lol.

I did some research, but can anyone tell if updating BIOS will get me any further. Did update my Graphiccard tho.

Adding +1 for the same problem ;)

More like +0 from you :D.
Temperature is high. Mine are 63C Gaming.
BIOS should help if description says "resolved thermal management" or similar, but update bios in any case.

    Change thermal grease.

Okay guys, i did a clean up on my fan and yeah both fans r full of dust. I do feel the temp are lower than what it used to be the past few days. And btw which grahpic card driver shld i install?? the one from dell website or the one on nVdia website?? I read alot of forum posts saying that none are stable and at time causes BSOD to some m15x owners.

One last thing is that do i need to update OSD application?? I do not know what is that really for but mine is still version 1.1.0

I doubt the OSD update would have any effect.. OSD=on screen display.
THey are the pictures that pop up when you adjust brightness and toggle stealthmode and so on..

too hot, if the vents are clean and you're getting those temps on idle, you may require new thermal paste.

    @iCare4you
osd is the icons displayed when you up/down volume/brightness those sorts of things. can be ignored if those icons are popping up for you.
as for which driver, i'd go with the latest stable release.

@icare4you what are your temps at idle and gaming now?.I think dell drivers run more stable but latest nvidia will perform better,i suggest running latest nvidia and see if they work on your system.

At idle the temp around 50C , at gaming will be 78C (both plus minus). I have not really clean the fan totally as i do not have compressed air yet.

I updated latest BIOS and graphic drivers, will monitor it this few days. Btw i notice my cpu temp is getting hotter, while i playing game it can hit 80C, is that due to the dusty fan too? I use core temp to observe the cpu temp.

OKay i cleaned up my fan thoroughly now, it was freaking dusty in there and few bunch of dust combined together. I think thats the reason my fans are not working normally as it should.

I monitor the temperature for GPU and CPU,
at idle (roughly around) GPU 45C , CPU 55C
while gaming (roughly around) GPU 60C, CPU 60C

Now i can feel the hot air coming out with full blast from the vent, previously it was like none or very little of it. Also, i have no more lag while gaming, it all went smoothly and i can play at the maximum settings. Love this m15x to the max.

    ah good to hear
yup dust is a real killer, it's surprising how fast it builds up.
with a little bit of maintenance every month or so, it should run really sweet.

Yeah. 1 hair succed by fan and stucked in a grill + another 1 and then another one. Then dust stayes there and then there is a carpet of dust holding hot air from a computer. I had this 3 or 4 times on old laptops. I thought that new one have bigger wholes in a grill to prevent this...
