Well here I was, just about to finally pull the plug and order my m15x, this after 6+ months of waiting, and here dell appear to have pulled the ATI GPUs from the config page. I was planning to order with the 5850... All that's available are the Nvidia cards; 240m and 460m (see attached)

Hopefully this is just a technical issue with the site.

NOTE: This is the UK dell site I am reporting this for.

You should call them and order via phone. I believe they have much more configurations that way. Try it :)

That's interesting... hopefully that'S because they want to update the ati card to the 6xxx series :D *dreaming*

Like MrValle said, call Dell... if they haven't got the card anymore and you really want it buy the laptop with the 240m and then get the 5850 online and replace it with the other card.

However, the 460m is a pretty powerful card too...!!

Yeah I was thinking I'll get onto a rep in the morning and ask what the reason being is.

I prolly won't bother with the cheapest config and manually upgrade option, although I can see the logic in this respect.

My main concern is the +£200 price jump, aswell as the fact that unless PhysX is involved the 5850 card generally outperforms the 460m in most of today's games. I'm sure the 460 is a great card in its own right, just not what I'm looking for.

    Thanks for the feedback.

From what I had heard the 460M is quite a performer, and beats the 5850 in some tests. For the most part they're about on par with each other. Also, the 460 gets you Physx support. Heck, I've got an OC'd 260 and it performs pretty darn well. I'd love to get a 460 at some point though.

The 5850m is still available at Dell USA, for $100 less than the 260m (!!!) and $150 less than the 460m ("Alienware Recommended")(LOL). What a company.

go with 460M, its a beast :D im using 460M right now, it runs smooth pretty much all games on high-ultra settings with ~50-60 FPS. Also, highest temp overload i've recorded is only 60'C. It's worth the investment ;)

I am currently liaising with a dell rep about the availability of a 5850 and the reason why the option was removed in the 1st place. I will wait and see what they mail me with... It was suggested that this is going to be a permanent option however (maybe the rep was talking bull, I dunno), so no more ATI cards with the m15x, when configuring from the UK (for the moment at least).

I will let you know any details I recieve when I get them, for those that are interested. Thanks for the replies.

for gaming the 460m and 5850 will be similar in performance. the 5850 just does synthetic benches better because of its high oc. with better drivers for the 460m i can see it closing the gap.

I've seen many times how they remove some hardware on the US config page for some days, and then they put it back. The reason is because they get out of stock so they can't accept more orders with non-available hardware, so maybe they just run out of ATI cards, wait a few days and they will surely put them back. Seems like Dell has a faulty just-in-time logistics system :p

Yep, I upgraded drivers for my 460m this weekend, and benchmark tests yielded a 10% increase in my graphics score.......

    Hope there's more to come.
