    Hi guys,

    I am having a funny/annoying problem on my 6 months old m15x.

Sometimes, when I play games (high load) or when I browse the web (low load), my laptop freezes, and pressing any keys just won't do anything. The only thing I can do is a nasty hard reboot by pressing the power button for a few seconds.

It started to occur about 2 weeks ago, and I can't remember installing any funny software. I have uninstalled VMWare, and I have updated the graphics drivers to the latest. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with all the latest updates.

When I check the Event journal, I can read:

Any help is very much appreciated.

No, it's a GTX 460m, but still Nvidia.

Is this a known problem ?

My full specs: Intel i7 840QM, 8GB DDR3 1333 Hz RAM, Nvidia GTX 460M 1.5GB (latest drivers), Samsung 640GB HDD, motherboard Intel PM55, Bios A08.

Try WhoCrashed, which will analyze recent crash dumps in an effort to determine the cause, particularly those based on driver failures. Very useful for its plain language approach. Can't always provide the answer, but will at least point you in the right direction for Google searches.

Well latest developments are: I started having BSOD and nvlddmkm.sys is the culprit.

Does anyone have good working nvidia drivers for me to try different drivers ?

I doubt you have the wrong drivers. Have you removed the bottom panel and checked to make sure the GPU fan is actually working and/or not clogged with all kinds of fluff? I would start there but most likely you have a failing graphics card and Dell will need to replace it. I would backup your system and be prepared to possibly reinstall windows, drivers etc.

Exactly. I completely agree. Nvlddmkm.sys error says that the driver fails, this can have several reasons, but if it gets worse over time you can assume that your GPU is dying.
First of all try different drivers. Also what are your GPU temps?

Hi guys, I had this same exact issue with beta driver 275.36 and (I think) also the official 275.33 drivers. It usually happened why I left my M15x (GTX 460m) in idle - when I came back to use my machine, everything had frozen, and the only way to use it again was to do dirty power off.

So I went back down to official version 270.61 (dated 18-04-2011). I also had major issues in Crysis 2 with the newer drivers, so that's another reason why I downgraded to 270.61. I no longer have these issues.

    Hope this helps.

I uninstalled the 275.33 and let the system reinstall the 259.64 instead. I'll try for a few days see if it has improved.

I still tend to think it's a driver problem. Well I hope so.

It could be, sometimes beta drivers can be really unstable. Good luck!

Well, the laptop froze again :( Only a hard reset worked...

Considering that the problem started all of a sudden 3 weeks ago now, I'm starting to revise my opinion... might be the CG that has a problem T_T

Time to backup and send it back to Dell ?

No, time to call Dell and let them come to you. That's how it works with an Alienware... :)

Is the 460m a faulty video card in general ? If yes, can I ask for an ATI instead ?

    Cheers
