My new M15X plays DVDs and displays normal screen data on my Epson projection system just fine. However, it will not display FSX flight sessions.

What is special about FSX output that it is fooling my projector into a black screen--do I need a CODEC or something?

    Thanks!

Hmm, weird. Make sure you don't extend the desktop, choose duplicate or only the projector to display the image.

Make sure the resolution you set in FSX is supported by the projector, I'm not sure whether your projector automatically downscales the picture in case the resilution is too high.

does the fsx playback record an actual video file?
or does it record flight data and use the simulator's engine to playback the info?

Try setting your projector as the primary monitor. That should hopefully solve it.
