    Hi All

ive owned my M15X for 15 months now ive had it from new i have the top end processor i7 920xm with 8gig of memory and the 260m card however ive had the following due to heat issues:

    3 cpu heatsinks
    3 graphics cards and fan

however im still getting heat issues last nite i was on the phone to alienware who was remotely running software tests on my pc and i had a new replacement heatsink within 1 minute of starting up pc my cpu cores was running in excess of 80-86 degrees when he was running prime 95 stress testing within 2 minutes the pc reached over 100 and switched itself off

alienware want to collect the pc and test it for 7-14 days i still have 2 years warranty remaining im disabled and do all my day to day things on my M15X ive been asking them to swap the motherboard and cpu but they want the pc back im afraid if i send this to them i wont get the orginal pc back

if that unit has been such a lemon, I would send it back and be happy to get a replacement from them. I think they want to test it to find out why it is having so many issues.

I'd concede and let them have it.

Not sure if it's allowed but I'd have the hard drive out of it, so all your data is safe - check with them, they should be OK with that.

Then, even if you don't get the same laptop back (which may be a good thing) you'll be able to slot the old hard rive back in and everything will be setup exactly the same before you returned it.

If they insist you send it back with the hard drive in the laptop, your best bet is to image the disk before you send it to them, then if the worst comes to the worst you can just restore it from the image. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't allow you to keep the disk though, it's fairly common practice when returning a machine to retain your sensitive and valuable data.

    Where are you from?

forgot to mention when it overheated last night there was a funny electrical burning smell i think that would be the thermal paste melted on the cpu/gpu

I've had some issues with my m15x the last few months. And after they tried fixing the same problem twice I asked for a replacement. THey said that they have to try and fix the same problem atleast 3 times in order to do that.

The third try didnt fix it either, so I asked for a replacement. They said I could either get a new one, or all my money back.

Seeing as the m15x is no longer in production they would have to give you a m17x, which is aaaalmost same size, but has longer batterylife, sandy bridge processors, and the lowest gpu you can get in it is the gtx560 (which is a big step up from your 260).
Or if you decide to go with the money you could buy an even more powerfull m17x with the AMD 6990 og gtx580.

So you should really just call them and ask for your money back

you don't have to send it in, i had 3 replacement systems from them and never did i have to turn it in. they asked but i told them i use it for work and school, so being without a laptop is not an option. with those many issues i would just ask them for a replacement or refund.
