Hey hey fellow 15x owner. I've been having some annoying problems here regarding performance.

    1) To start, I'll go ahead and tell you GPU woes. Playing Bad company 2 is kinda like waiting for a bus you know is late. Loading maps take well over 40sec's, and when you finally get into the match the game play becomes choppy. On the loadout screen (which should be displaying an overhead view of the battle) shows nothing but a sold gray. It is only playable in low settings, I'm even playing it in DX9 as low in DX10 is also unplayable. These issues also persist in black ops as there are long load times and even choppier gameplay.

I've been trying maaaaaannnnny different drivers (11.4 being the newest) but only to have some success, only just after the divers have been installed I do notice a very slight performance increase which fades shortly after.

    2) My second issue is the damn long boot times. Sometimes I get lucky and it boots quickly, but for the majority of the time I'm stuck staring at the gray alien head for over 2 mins sometimes. I'm not too sure what the root cause of this is, I've updated my BIOS to A08 to no avail.

    Here are my spacs:

    i5 M540 @2.53GHz
    8GB RAM
    Win7 home premium (sp1)
    5850 GDDR5
    500GB HD

I'd also like to add that I've tried: power drain, mutiple drivers, HD checks and I can also assure that my stealth mode is not on and I always run in high performance. except when on battery power.

The first thing I would do is update the system to A09

Second, I would use GPU-z and throttlestop in the background while running the game to monitor your clocks and see what's actually happening.

As for the boot times, do you have any USB devices plugged in at boot?

Make sure you dont have stealth mode enabled, my ATI 5850 performs well so I dont know why yours doesnt.

Try updating your BIOS to A09, your processor clock speed is fine. Doesnt make any sense on why its slow, I'd probably try a reformat.

    What's your WEI scores?

solid gray screen at bc2 = no kill cam (are you playing on hardcore servers?)
specs in sig here, and bc2 gameplay is great and very very playable even with 4xmsaa

I thought the 5850 needed A09 to function? Or is that just the 460M?

To my understanding neither needs A09, I could be wrong though

I just upgraded to A09/EC1.18 a few days ago, I was on A08/EC1.16 if that helps.

Okay, sorry I haven't replied in a while. Been busy with work and school.

I tried updating my BIOS to A09, but when I click on the file to run it (usually suppose to go to the page where it asks if you want to flash it or burn it to a cd) it tells me an error that my os version is not supported and to check if I have a x32 or x64 bit os

I'll run the tests tonight and post the results. I did play LoL last night though with GPUZ in the background and my max temp was around 72 while playing and about 50 idle if that helps at all.

    Good news! Got the info.

Just to clarify what I've been dealing with the past few weeks. It took 1:30 to load a MP game on BC2.

Also, I'm not sure if this is a big deal or not, but when I was adjusting the resolution the size of the game screen shrunk instead of resolution going down.

Your GPU-Z log shows your GPU downclocking to the 2D settings of 100MHz core / 150 MHz memory but I think that is only happening before and after you are gaming. The normal 3D settings are 625 MHz core / 1000 MHz memory.

There was one incident in ThrottleStop where it shows that the CPU was using some chipset clock modulation which can instantly slow the CPU down. Once again, I'm not quite sure what you were up to when this happened. It only happened once in the log file at 20:09:42.

To help prevent this from happening you can put a check mark in the Chipset Clock Modulation box and make sure that is set to 100.0% but overall I don't see a major problem. If you are having long load times it would be a good idea to run a hard drive benchmark test. Maybe there is a problem with your hard drive that is slowing your system down.

Okay. So I tried checking the chip set modulation box but I didn't see any performance increases at all.

I did do a passmark full system performance test and here are the results:

    PassMark Rating
    This Computer 1014.4

    CPU Mark
    This Computer 1523.4

    2D Graphics Mark
    This Computer 344.8

    3D Graphics Mark
    This Computer 1469.7

    Memory Mark
    This Computer 1549.7

    Disk Mark
    This Computer 479.8

And more comprehensive hard drive results:

    Disk Mark
    This Computer 479.8

    Disk - Sequential Read
    This Computer 78.7

    Disk - Sequential Write
    This Computer 50.4

Disk - Random Seek + RW
    This Computer 3.5

Also, I'm still not able to update my BIOS to A09 due to the complications stated at the start of this thread. Any ideas?

I suspect you may have system file corruption or master file table corruption or a defective disk drive. Start by checking your system file integrity -- go to Start/All Programs/Accessories and click on Run. In the popup box, enter "cmd" (no quotes) and Run as Administrator. At the DOS prompt, enter "SFC /SCANNOW" (no quotes). It may take a while. That will run System File Check" and will examine and, if possible, repair or replace any missing or corrupt system files. If that's the problem, SFC may cure your ills, but you probably won't be that lucky. Report your results.

Sorry, but predictable. SFC reported all files passed, no errors? Now try Check Disk.

Click on Start and Computer. Right-click your c: drive and select Properties. Click on the Tools tab and, under Error-checking, click Check Now. In the popup box, check "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Click Start. Windows can't check a disk while in use, so you will be prompted to schedule the disk check when you next start the computer. Click Schedule Disk Check. Then reboot and let it examine the disk. It may take some time.

Ran the disk check, everything seamed to be okay. Tested it out with BC2 and the map loaded much faster this time but when I got in the game it was a very slow and stuttery star. The game was also slightly faster then before, but there was stuttering still throughout the round I played. I still believe its some kind of GPU issue

I noticed from the GPU-Z log that your 5850m vbios has been modified to increase the voltage to 1.08v. When and why was that done and were any other changes made to the vbios? What video drivers are you currently using?

I noticed i had this file called desktop.ini in my system. I found that it was a virus and manually deleted it all. I did a computer wide search on that file name. Now it starts up faster and much snappier. Be careful and always check for virus.

I've never personally made changes to the vbios, I'm not too sure why something would be changed. Im using 11.3 right now after about a week of trying the 11.4 preview.

Did someone own this laptop before you? A vbios cannot be modified and flashed accidentally. On the other hand, increasing the voltage to 1.08v should have no adverse effect, but you need to be certain the vbios is clean and current. Using GPU-Z, check to confirm that the BIOS Version of your card is the same as shown here:

Even if current, I would reflash your vbios using the A02 vbios here: Drivers and Downloads. It will need to be at stock settings (no 1.08v o/c) anyway before getting Dell involved if it comes to that. Easy process.

Either 11.3 or 11.4 Preview drivers are solid and should not be causing problems unless corrupted or improperly installed. Is it correct that either or both of these driver sets provided normal performance before the recent difficulties occurred?

By the same token, you need to reflash the system BIOS to A09. I saw your earlier reference to difficulties encountered in a previous attempt. Do it the easy way, Download the "Non-Packaged" version, i.e., the file M15xA09.iso to the Desktop. Drivers & Downloads. Then just insert a blank CD, right click on the file, select "Burn disc image" and click Burn. It will eject when the burn is complete. Insert the CD, reboot, press F12 at and during the boot screen (Alienhead logo) and select boot from CD. The flashing program will start automatically and flash the BIOS. Follow the on-screen instructions. Wait for it to turn off and restart itself to flash the EC. Select "Y" when prompted and let it finish and turn itself off. Be patient and don't intervene except when prompted for an action.

At this point, you will have verified system file integrity, file structure integrity, master file table condition, basic hard drive functionality, valid current video card bios and valid current system bios.

See whether than moves us forward.

I reverted back to the A02 VBIOS drivers and there appears to be no difference in performance sadly. I've been testing out many different gpu drivers and at seams that the 11.3 drivers have the best performance on my laptop.

Im afraid to say the "easy way" again isn't so easy for me. I've been having problems with my disk drive ever since I got the laptop (It is new). The problem being it dose not recognize disks. It accepts them but seams to forget that it just had a disk inserted and wont even let me eject. The strange thing is every now and then it will recognize there is a disk in it, in which case it can run it and everything. But come the next time I restart the laptop the issue comes back. I have tried many different things to get the disk drive to start working again; removing upper and lower filters, getting new drivers, disabling and re-enabling, but nothing worked.

So would it be possible to put it on a flash drive instead or does it have to be a cd?

-Another thing that I noticed while I just played BC2 with fraps on, is that my FPS seams to drop and rise constantly. For example it rill run at 20-40fps (depending on whats happening) then all of a sudden drop to around 8fps for what seams to be no reason. This happens around every 10-20 seconds.

When did these performance problems begin? Can you recall any event or change or addition that might have triggered the slowdown? The yo-yoing fps does suggest GPU problems, but it can also be power or motherboard problems. The fact that it takes so long to boot suggests non-Windows, non-driver, i.e., hardware or bios issues, but not definitively. Have you considered restoring it to a prior time when all was working properly to see whether it results from some Win 7 configuration or corruption issue? In any event, you should not have to suffer with a reluctant DVD-CD drive; that should be replaced forthwith. So call Dell and you may as well get them involved in the whole process now. But again, your GPU looked normal in the GPU-Z log, although it was a small sample. Dell will usually have you run 3dMark06 to test the video performance; if you have it, you could run it now to see what it indicates.

On the A09 matter, sure you can use a DOS bootable USB ram stick to flash the system bios. If you need help with how to format and create a bootable memory stick or how to use it, let me know. But it's time to get Dell involved and let that warranty earn its keep. Sorry I haven't been able to find a quick and easy solution, but there may not be one.

Hello everyone. I too am an owner of an Alienware M15X and I am very happy with it. Apart from having the exact same problems as the OP.

My -THEORY- is overheating, and thus I am going to open up my laptop and clean all the dust out tonight, as I haven't cleaned it since I got it about 10 months ago. I have sucked out some dust through the back, but so far I have been too scared to open it up as I am not too familar with laptops. I'll get back to this thread when I am done and give you all an update on my results. Meanwhile I am looking forward to hearing from the OP again, to see what Dell has to say should you contact them.

I cleaned my laptop last night and there has been no change sadly... Also, I can't seem to run Homefront even on Medium settings, despite the "Can you run it?" Test telling me my system is qualified enough even for recommended settings.

I am at a loss by now. I've tried so many things and it keeps lacking performance. Maybe the only thing left to do is to replace the graphics card?

Download and install HWiNFO32 and let us know what it shows. That will give you the temps for both the CPU and GPU. If heat is the problem, you'll know.

Right, so I noticed that there was actually a specific way of getting only temperature logs lol, sorry about that. But maybe something useful can be found in the spec log too?

Anyway, I have the temperature log ready but its saved in CSV format so for some reason I can't upload it to the forum... I uploaded it here instead: 2shared - download Temp Log HOMEFRONT.CSV Link is safe. I hope this brings up some new ideas and possible solutions. :)

Your GPU is running red hot, with temps exceeding 100C under load and in the 90C's almost continuously. Time to replace the paste and pads on that 260M. I'm surprised it isn't automatically shutting itself down to avoid damage. Your CPU is also running hot, mostly in the high 70C's and low 80C's, which is too high for an dual core CPU, but not fatal. The CPU should also be repasted while it's all opened up.

I did have throttlestop running while doing that log, perhaps that pushed it a bit over the edge. But in any case I believe you are right.

Pads? I know what cooling paste is, but I am not sure about the pads? Have you got a link to a video of someone doing this maybe? :)

Thermal pads are used to overlay the video memory (VRAM) chips on the video card to facilitate contact with the heatsink for heat dispersion. The VRAM is typically the hottest part of a high performance video card, particularly if overclocked.

Since I have a 5850M, I don't have any saved references to guides or videos covering the GTX 260M, but I'm sure there are plenty around given the early popularity of the card. We need some 260M owners to jump in.

Are we talking the same amount of paste as needed when installing a CPU, or is it a smaller area when its a GPU?

I'm asking because I found these "paste pads" which is a solid form of paste, instead of the liquid stuff. It automatically melts when it gets hot enough. - Wondering if I can use one of these, or do I have to use the liquid paste?

The thermal paste is better - MX-4 (Arctic Cooling) is my favorite, but AS5 (Arctic Silver)and OCZ Freeze are also popular here in the forum and very highly regarded. Plenty of others as well. By reputation at least, the packaged paste pads are lower quality, but I have never had any personal experience with them. They are widely used by manufacturers (including Dell) because of the ease of application. One tube of paste will provide many applications. The GPU ordinarily requires a little more than the CPU because the die is usually larger, but that depends of course on the CPU and GPU involved.

Check out Inap's Thermal Paste Guide. It applies to the 5850 in a M15x, but the basic process is the same. http://www.sendspace.com/file/09h9ef

Right, I found the MX-4 Arctic Cooling and I have ordered a tube.
As for the cooler pads, I am guessing that this is the right stuff:
    CoolerKit.dk - Køb Thermalpad - 120x20mm - 0,5mm ?

But maybe its wiser to buy the 1.0 mm thick stuff just in case. Can always cut it to get it to fit better.

I'll update again once I have applied the new paste and pads, hopefully with a more "cool" pc :)

Thank you for your help so far Revelator. :)

It involves replacing paste on a 5850m GPU and a 920XM CPU in a M15x, but the basic process is the same. This Guide has walked a lot of people through their first (and subsequent) repasting projects. I still refer to it.

Also download Inap's GPU Replacement Guide, which will be particularly helpful in getting inside the M15x and removing the vents, fans, etc., which can be a bit of a pain the first time. Download M15x GPU.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way.

Wattos' video is also helpful. YouTube - Accessing the Graphics card on the M15X

Be very gentle when removing the touchpad panel (above the keyboard). There is a ribbon cable connecting the panel to the motherboard which is difficult to replace. I leave it connected and just snap the panel back on after removing the vent retaining screws and then remove the panel again to secure the vents, but some disconnect and then reconnect the ribbon cable. Hard with big hands.

I read the thermal paste guide, I'll check out the two other guides too. :)

*EDIT* I don't mean to be a smartass, but I'm wondering why does he take off the touchpanel in that video on youtube? The other night when I was cleaning dust out of the pc, I didn't take it off, but yet I was able to get in anyway?

You have to remove the touchpad panel to get access to 4 screws (2 on each side) that hold the rear vents, which have to be removed to take off the fans and remove the heatsinks. Yep, there is no reason to remove it for normal cleaning.

Alright, sorry for not getting back to you sooner revelator (been busy with exams).

I reformated my HD and there is a noticeable increase in performance with bc2 using 11.4 preview drivers. There still is stuttering though and the game is still mainly only playable in dx9 but I'm about to update the VBIOS again and tweak with the CCC setting a bit and see what the result is.

And it would be awesome if you could tell me how to make a bootable jump drive :)

Updated BIOS to version A09 but there doesn't seam to be any changes; still have the unusually long start ups and there are no changes to gameplay performance. Think it might be a hardware issue considering its still choppy in game? I was also thinking that BC2 might be one of those games that just doesn't work well on my system for some reason.

It also seams that when I try to change the resolution all it does is shrink the game window and last time I played, the fan didn't seam to be running very high. I don't know what f**k is going on but it's extremely annoying...

You said you reformatted your HD , which would generally necessitate reinstalling Windows. If you're still having problems after a clean Windows installation, it is probably a hardware issue. In any event , it's beyond our abilities to fix. I'd recommend calling Dell support forthwith.

Kinda new update. Looks like my CPU is running hot (50-70C) just when playing league of legends, not a very demanding game. When its idling its running 43-55C.

    Good news.

While waiting for my thermal paste to arrive, I did some sorting of old papers and discovered that I had a certain "Next business day" warranty on my laptop, valid for another 88 days. So I figured, why not make use of it?
I called Dell and they sent out a technician the next day who replaced my graphics card + thermal paste on the cpu. I made sure to take notes while he was working, so I have no fears anymore regarding replacing the paste anymore as it really wasn't that big of a deal.

Pc is running as it did in the beginning and the temperature stays below 60 on the GPU :)
