    I've just put a small depost on a year (ish) old M15x. i7, 4GB memory, HD5850 GPU.
Will this machine still be up to the task for games like: Crysis 3, World of tanks etc etc...
OR shall i get something like HP Envy, •AMD A10-5750M, 8GB memory and HD 8550G

Please advise as i want a mid-level games machine.
    thanks
    steve

That HP Envy would be a terrible choice, that CPU and GPU is awful for gaming. The M15x is still a very good laptop and is very upgradable as basically everything inside is upgradable!

Get yourself that M15x and get a GTX 680m or a 7970m and an i7 920/940xm CPU and an SSD. With that you will be playing every game today at high-ultra settings. An M15x with an extreme CPU and a 680m or 7970m will destroy a lot of games today (especially when you overclock the CPU & GPU).

I've just started upgrading my M15x and I too was in you're situation. I was either going to spend £1000+ on a really good desktop system (including keyboard/mouse/monitor) or a new laptop or spend half the amount and upgrade my beloved M15x. I ended up doing up the M15x as it is a really good laptop (good looks, good cooling etc) and is very reliable (it has been to me). I brought an i7 920xm oem for £170 the other day and there was also a GTX 760m on ebay that was £240! (winning bid). In total that is £410 which is very good for huge performance boost. Also you have the option to buy an SSD, upgrade the RAM, get USB 3.0 and even upgrade the wireless card! The options are endless.

But if you just want mid range gaming laptop, then get the M15x with the 5850 as that is still a good card for running games at medium-high settings. It won't run crysis 3 very well unless you put the settings with a mixture of low/medium settings. Either way its still a fine machine and you have the option to upgrade in future if you wish :D

It depends if it has the 1080p screen or 900p. I'd save up for the 1080p first if it doesn't come with it. Games will run better if it only has 900p to power.

You can pick up a gtx 660m or AMD 6970m for pretty darn cheap now, especially if used. That would be a big improvement over that graphics card. 7970m have been selling for $200-250 lately too which is fantastic value.

M15x can destroy any game :) Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider we have all played them at max settings.

thanks, Sorry for being a noob, but IF i bought a AMD 6970m from ebay etc... would it be an easy swap (just swap cards) and it would make my X15m quite a bit better.
    thanks.

the 5850m can run crysis 3 on high settings 1080p, no need to turn down settings to low/medium

Not a particulary good choice! Still quite slow I7 and slow GPU by todays standards. If you had spent that 550 pounds on the M15x you could have have a faster I7 and the 680M GTX which is twice as fast as the 670M GTX(rebranded hot fermi 580M). You find it hugely faster than the 5850M at all.

I hope you are happy but you spectacularly ignored our advice...

I thought the GTX670 was better than HD5750???
As to i7 I thought there wasn't too much difference in speed but then I didn't ask advice on CPU, maybe I should have.
But as people have said I can upgrade CPU and gpu but I can't upgrade the screen from 15" to 17" so having 17" is better :)
    Thanks

Well I'm glad you're happy with what you got so as long as you're happy I guess it's all good, but as me and others have said a M15x with an i7 920XM/940XM and a GTX 680m/7970m would have destroyed anything in it's path especially on a 1600x900 resolution screen... But it's a bit too late now... Anyway I hope you enjoy you're new beast either way :D

I agree with you khetik! The 5850 is still a great mid range card! (because of bandwidth) Plus Crysis 3 favours AMD heavily. The 7970M destroys it.
