So as all faithful members of this lovely forums know, I fried my 460m. As a new bios version has come out as well as matured drivers for the 470m GTX, it is time to give this another go. I jumped on the wagon and got me one of these cards recently. I'll update when I receive it with pictures and hopefully fully working benchmarks to follow - stock and overclocked. Then I might perhaps flash it with a newer vbois. From what I have heard, the voltage can be increased from 0.94v to 0.99v giving more OC headroom :D

Received and tested, still not going up to 3D Clocks Whyyyyy?!?!?

Cool!! Looking forward to see your work!! Though I'd wait with the vbios and first try modding the original from your card (unless you're really sure that the modded one you have is originally the same as the one from your card)

Dare I say this but Im about to deploy so with a little extra cash to play with what do people think about a M15x with a gtx 485m? Or should I just stick with the 6970m upgrade I was planning on doing?

The 485m is definitely a great card and I was tempted by it as well... but it's just too expensive imo for the little performance gain.

I haven't seen any trustworthy numbers about the power draw, but ii may be even higher than the one from the 6970m... and just look at the huuuuuge die, the card will run pretty hot :D

I'd love to see someone trying it, but I don't think it's worth paying the extra money... just my 0.02.

Back to topic, I really hope widezu69 will be successful, the 470m seems to be a great card and also has some nice OCing abilities afaik. Good luck!!

I too was going to check out the 485m but it looked impossible. That die is almost bigger than the copper area of the M15x heatsink so heating would be a problem. Anyways still waiting on things. Royal Wedding etc may have slowed the shippings and it is a weekend.

The large die size would actually improve cooling compared to a smaller die with the same total heat output.

no, but what he is saying is that the die is larger than the copper piece on the heatsink, so it would probably cause problems when it was in contact with the thing next to it(what is next to it? I forgot.)

    $560 at RJTech. That's $10 more than the 6970m.

Oh please... everyone knows what he's talking about. You don't seriously expect an explanation, do you?

There are about 10k more posts to which you can reply asking "Why do you say 5850? That's a desktop card..." Or "It's called ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850, not 5850m..." Lol, come on...

Thanks for being peaceful. I'm not sure why the AW drones are in attack mode. I meant no offense in asking, it's just that I found putting GTX after the numbers... curious.

Let's move along to less argumentative discourse.

    Good luck with your project.

Thanks. The real reason was really to do with nvidia putting the GT's and GTX's after the numbers during the 6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx and 9xxx era and I just got used to that. But anyways moving on as suggested, parcelforce are being really slow this week for some reason. I'm hoping to have some results by the end of this week. If all goes to pot, it will be up for sale and I'm going the 6970m route.

    ^^^lol..... Narnia has Alienware rigs?

By the way, I cant wAit for you to put that baby in there and do some positive testing?

A 6970 and a 470 in a M15x is what we M15x users have been dreaming of? All the best buddy...my best wishes.

On a side note, do you guys know if this 470 or 6970 is compatible with the 3D version of M17xR3..??? I know you can customise a R3 with a 6970 but not in India..sucks doesn't it? Anyways, I've ordered a M17xR3 3D and looking to put a BEAST of a card in it...I mean a 460M is a good card but I've already used it to it's full potential and it's getting boring these days. :D let me know of you guys have any info ok?
    Cheers.

No the 6970 can't be used with the 3d screen. People have gotten the 485m to work but with no luck getting 120hz.

Edit: It's coming tomorrow!!!! I have an exam at 10am BST so will do the testing afterwards and post results.

No you can't sorry if I wasn't clear the 485m works fine in the M17x R3 but the screen is stuck at 60Hz, you need 120Hz for 3D. Plus the fan control wasn't working but that doesn't matter though with the newest versions of HWInfo.

It is interesting though because Clevo have just released their P170HM3 with a 485m and a 3D screen. Plus if you search 485m on the Dell site, you get M17x R3. I'm gonna get me a new lappy in a few months and I'm banking on that (if there is any shread of truth in there)
