***NOTE, driver must be installed prior to the VBIOS update.

The following were posted today to the support.dell.com site for the M15x.

AMD Mobility Radeon HD5850 Display Driver
    v 8.763-100810a-104118C-Dell, A01

    Fixes and Enhancements
    1. Driver updates

AMD Mobility Radeon HD5850 VBIOS Update
    v13B96102.105, A02

IMPORTANT NOTE: This *VBIOS* is meant ONLY for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5850 video card offered in the M15x. Flashing any other model cards will result in a no boot/POST and cards will need to be replaced.

    Fixes and Enhancements
    1. Fixes display corruption issues found on some 5850 video cards

    Additional Information
This is an Alienware VBIOS flash tool. This tool will enable you to either create an ISO disk or a bootable USB drive. Upon creation of media you will need to reboot and boot into the chosen media by selecting F12 on Alienware logo BIOS screen in order to select the booting device.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To my knowledge, the AMD Display driver listed above (again, NOT the VBIOS), should be fine with any other Dell AMD GPU - so you 5730 owners should be ok with this driver as well.

Post problems, observations, questions, etc. I'm sure AW will be monitoring this release.

Smooth, easy installation for both vbios_A02 and the Dell 10.8 (8.763) drivers with no need for workarounds or removal of previous driver (I installed over an ATI 10.8 driver set). Performance is virtually identical in 3dMark06 and Vantage, but there is a somewhat greater tendency to crash at higher clocks (had to reflash to complete runs at 900/1100). All in all, a non-event so far. Remember that installing this vbios will reset all clocks or voltages to stock (625/1000/1.0v, etc), removing any tweaks made to the prior vbios.

I'm in a "tweaking" mood, I'm going to load this up now. Also try out some different drivers, currently using the Dell version that came on my CD.

Curious to play around, thus far everything is beyond expectations. :)

If it's not broken, break it, right? :p

just downloaded and installed everything. like you said it was a breeze to install and i didn't uninstall the old driver or nothing.

prolly do some benches later in the evening or something after a quick flash to up the voltage.

ok i sneaked away a did a single vantage run. i tried 990 on the core, i couldn't do it before on the older vbios, maxed was 985 on older vbios. but this time it ran all the way through and looked very stable doing so. so i'm gaving 2 thumbs up for this newer vbios and driver.

i also need to mention that i modded the new vbios to 1.15v @ 750/1050
and ran the bench @ 990/1100.

who needs a 5870 when you can push 990 on a 5850, hehehehehe

yeah using the companies AC unit. my wife would kill me if i did this at home, hehehehe.

also wow can temps be too low, isn't the lower the better. have to run it on AC because i flashed it to 1.15v and at 990/1100 i think my laptop would melt, heheh

no that makes sense with temps being that low on MAX when doing a bench that high since you are on A/C...I know you sold of your NZXT cryo and either way no notebook cooler will get your temps that low lolz...nice score i just loaded new bios and new drivers so gonna play around and see what i can run....only setting stable on this new card is 850/1100 @ 1.15. 905/1100 will make the driver crash and reset and 920 or higher on clock results on black or white screen and freeze.

wow thats strange so far i'm noticing no one else pushing the gpu as high as i do. i know someone out there must have similar result to me. because this is my 2nd 5850 and it performs the same as my last. and also did it in 2 separate systems.

    Hi

I installed the vbios and the driver and my catalyst version is showing as 10.6, not 10.8 as you have in your picture above, which is the version I was on before. Am I missing something here? Shouldn't the driver show as 10.8 for me too?!

I wouldn't bother querying it but I reckon my framerates are down in Bad Co 2 as a result of upgrading

    thanks

Many people are having problems on Battlefield Bad Company 2 with ATi drivers.
These drivers solve the problem of low performance in BC2?

    hi,

how do i check if the vbios has been installed properly?
if i go to the graphics hardware tab, it's showing the following:

    BIOS Version 012.020.000.029
    BIOS Part Number 113-B96102-105
    BIOS Date 2010/05/18

    that doesn't look right tho...

it should show 10.8 on the ccc control panel. if not then i guess it wasn't installed properly. mine shows the same thing as the rev.

what are your settings for bfbc2?

you can try uninstalling the ati drivers and the ccc, then run driver sweeper and ccleaners. reboot and reinstall the new driver. hopefully that will fix it.

since your card is still working, i don't think it damaged. stability really depends on the driver and vbios.

I don't know what's causing this incorrect Catalyst Version ID, but since all of the 10.8 drivers were installed properly, you might be able to fix it by reinstalling Catalyst Control Center. Not sure, but worth a try. Go to c:\dell\drivers\R28216\Packages\Apps\CCC and run setup.exe. That will uninstall the existing CCC and install (or reinstall) the Dell 10.8 version.

Mines also says 10.6 but the actual driver version matches 8.763 so I think its fine. Its probably just a bug that doesn't update the Catalyst Control Center. I bet if you install 10.8 drivers from AMD site and then install Dell drivers you would have 10.8.

    Hi Guys,

Dell upgraded my M15x to the 5850 a couple of weeks ago and ever since then whenever i play some games and then exit them back to windows, the screen brightness goes all dark. If i try turning the brightness up then it does nothing because it thinks that its already on full. I have tried the latest Vbios and Drivers as recommend on this thread but im still having the issue.

One thing that i have noticed though is that if i press CTRL + ALT + DEL the brightness resets itself, or even if i log out and back in. Can anyone help me this one?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

try disconnecting the cmos battery and do a power drain. i haven't seen this issue before, so just try this out first.

Ryan, if you are up for it, try a uninstall of Command Center and re-install the current version of CC. See if that resolves the brightness issue.

    Guys. Need help.

Tech guys just changed my GTX260M(Throttling problems) to ATI5850 then said to download the drivers and everything from the Dell website then "RAN AWAY". Great tech service!

Tried downloading the latest bios and drivers from the dell website, then I cant install them. When I clicked on the downloaded bios and driver, there was no reaction. Tried the power drain, multiple restart, ran as admin, etc but still no installation ran.

Eventually i went to the AMD website and downloaded the latest driver.

I noticed that its not the same as the one from Dell.
The bios is 012.020.000.002.000000 and the driver is atiumdag 8.762.0.0

    Need help. Thanks

You have the old vbios and need to update. When you double click on the downloaded vbios (A02) file, it unpacks a setup utility to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R281553. Navigate to that folder and run setup.exe, which will launch a utility that will burn the A02 vbios file to a bootable memory stick or CD. Reboot from either the memory stick or CD, as applicable, and follow the directions.

625/1000 is the stock setting for a 5850.

    Try downloading from here: UPShare.me.

You will have to unzip this file and then run to unpack. The file service doesn't permit uploading .exe files.

no you do not need to reinstall windows, i don't understand why they would say that. also upgrade your laptop bios to A08 if you haven't done so. also the 5850 have a newer vbios for it too. let us know if you need any help doing any of this.
