Hey guys, through the m14x & M18x launch video just now I've heard the guy saying that these two lappys have CPUs that are overclockable in the new AW Bios?

Why are they implementing these OC features in those new AW Bios? Could this mean that our beloved M15x is getting a new Bios feature for CPU overclocking?
Or is it only for the 2nd-gen Core i7 CPUS?

    :confused2:

Ooh interesting. But M15x's have the option through SetFSB, well most do anyways. The other people have extreme processors so its pretty much covered. The overclock will be like what the M11x R2 has at the moment, not much like 5%. Won't make a difference in game if your GPU is decent.

Hmm I know about setfsb, it's a shareware provided by some jap dood right? xD

If i'm not mistaken, the guy said on the video that this new bios feature will give you precise and flexible overclocking options?
I think we may be able to overclock our CPU ALOT. Who knows.. maybe it's just another broken hope :((

I think they said that about the M17x R2 and the M11x. Honestly, Throttlestop is the way forward.

Sandy Bridge overclocking is a bad joke. Sure the new models might have some bios overclocking options but when you are limited to only a 1% or 2% increase before you lose stability, there's not much point.

Most Sandy Bridge CPUs are also locked down so software like ThrottleStop won't be able to do very much with them. The days of unlimited overclocking like you could do with the 920XM/940XM are probably over.

    Unfortunately it seems you're right...

I guess Intel didn't like all the loopholes you discovered! :D

    NOOOOOOOO!
well it feels good to have had such a delightful cpu anyway.

sandy bad overclockers? even the new extreme series?
such a shame, in contrast to their desktop lineup which seems to be overclockable like crazy. ( 3.4ghz -> 5ghz on the 2600k running on air with nothing more than a slight voltage bump)

Sandy Bridge overclocks fine if you have an unlocked multiplier like the 2920XM has but for all the other Sandy Bridge CPUs, there is very little to be gained by trying to increase the bus speed before you lose stability.

The 2920XM looks good but it's possible that the turbo multiplier can only be adjusted in the bios and if that's true, Dell might limit the maximum turbo multiplier that you can select. They always used to do this in their Core 2 Extreme laptops so they might do the same with the 2920XM. If the maximum turbo multiplier is locked, ThrottleStop won't be able to adjust it higher when you are in Windows.

They overclock fine. The BCLK goes almost as far as on desktop boards, making do without any tweaking options like memory ratios, QPI and memory controller voltages.

There is a free alternative made by Nando4 called SetPLL. Does everything SetFSB does, but faster and in command line. You'll need to create a PLL definition file first though as it doesn't have the vast library of PLLs SetFSB built up.
