I have two 23" IPS panels hooked up to my M15x (5850 video), one through DP->HDMI->DVI which works perfectly, the other straight VGA which is barely acceptable. I'll be getting a Mac Mini in a few weeks to use for development testing, and I would like to get a KVM and found this one that will switch dual monitors between DP systems: Dual Monitor DisplayPort USB KVM Switch - 2-port | Dual DisplayPort | StarTech.com

Anyway, it says you need 2 DP outputs, or a single DP that is "dual head", and I have searched everywhere and cannot find any info on whether or not the M15x/5850 is dual head. My gut tells me no, but I thought I would see if anyone knows for sure.

If it's not dual head, which would give me better quality - a VGA to DVI adapter (really expensive) or just ditch the VGA altogether and use a USB video adapter? I guess a 3rd option would be something like the Matrox Dual Head 2 Go, but the aggregated resolution would be 3840x1080 which I think is more than the 5850 will support.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but what's wrong with using the VGA port?
You have too many feets of cable?
The VGA should have resolution enought to work just fine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array

    Well, just an opinion.

VGA does work but it looks washed out and blurry compared to HDMI; at least thats my experience with my Alienware M11x and M15x

Strange, that happens to me if I use a more than (for example) 4 meters (13 feet) cable.

Sorry for the late reply - got buried in work for the last week.

Anyway, the problem with the VGA port is that

    1) The display is noticeably more washed out and less sharp than the identical monitor on DP->HDMI->DVI sitting next to it. The cable is only about 2m, so that's not the problem.

    2) I am getting ready to add a Mac Mini to my setup for testing (I'm a developer) and getting everything up to the same digital standard, whether it be DP, HDMI, or DVI would make it much easier to setup a KVM or some other kind of switch solution.

What I ultimately want is to find a DVI or HDMI switchbox, preferably something that can be software controlled, that I can hook all my monitors and computers up to and just switch on the fly what computer is on what display. Then I could use something like Synergy to control various machines without dragging a KVM into the mix.

In order to do that, I guess I'll go with a VGA->HDMI converter. Those seem to be reasonably priced and people seem to be happy with them. They are a lot more common and cheaper than VGA->DVI, probably because more people use them (to hook laptops up to a TV, etc.)
