The best upgrade is the i7-940xm and if you want to go 1 step lower would be the i7-920xm. Both are very good at overclocking with throttlestop. Ebay is a great place to look, shirleyfu117 is a trusted seller for cpus. happy hunting.

You can't exchange your cpu, but you can always sell it here or on ebay to help cover the costs in purchasing the higher end cpu. Sandy bridge cpu's will not fit/work in an M15x. Since you have the i7-740, your upgrade options are the i7-840/920/940xm. That's in order of both price and performance. Only upgrades worth doing would be the 920xm or the 940xm as I stated earlier.

I would recommend u to go for 920xm.. you can find it on ebay for a decent price and u can sell urs in NBR quite easily!

Have to agree, bang for buck the 920xm is my choice. Can be OC to keep up with 940 easily.

The 940xm is as high as you can go with the M15x. However, as others have mentioned, the 920xm is nearly the same thing (the 940xm being unlocked, the 920xm not, but can be unlocked using a program called Throttlestop) but costs less, and should be the one you look at closer.

No, that would be the desktop 980X. Only 920X M and 940X M mobile are the highest supported CPUs for the M15x.

    820QM work with the m15x?
Does ES or OEM matter or will both just work?

940xm is the highest supported , but you can definitely save a few bucks with the 920xm and overclock it.

I have been looking at the 840QM because the 920XM is too expensive for me :(

I seriously doubt you would really see any meaningful performance boost upgrading from what you have to an 840. It would likely be a waste of money. The 920 would at least give a noticeable boost, plus it can be unlocked, unlike the 840.

Just save your money a little longer, and get that 920! ;)
