Have you actually tried Win7 or Vista drivers from the Dell page? Often I find that although drivers are labeled as XP or Vista that they'll work on several versions of Windows.

Sounds like you need CHIPSET drivers to start with - which should sort your 'base system device' out if they work on XP, and then I'd move to AMDs website and grab an XP driver for your 5850.

Should be pretty straightforward, although I've not put XP on an M15x, but I have seen several postings about it here so I'm sure there are more experienced people who may give different advice.

If you are using vmware, you need to install vmware tools, that will solve the video problem.
