In an effort to get my 30in monitor working with my m15x at full res (and avoiding an upgrade to an m18x) I've considered purchasing a ViDock 4 Plus

From what I've read, the dock should be compatible, however, if anyone has experience using the dock (or a similar ViDock) with this laptop, I would appreciate the insight.

In addition, what would be the fastest card (current generation) that would work in the dock? I'm looking for something that will be faster than my 5870m and consumes less than 225 Watts if possible :)

    I'm thinking of a 670 (maybe a 680 but that's pushing max power probably)

Thanks in advance for your insight :)

How about a 7970M installed directly inside your M15x!!

Alot better than the 5870M and consumes only 100W ;) For the record my M15x with one can perform almost as well as a desktop 580 GTX!

Anyways performance would be alot better than than the vidock would be able to provide through its castrated bandwidth.

    Thanks for the reply :)

You pretty much confirmed that the ViDock, while a decent option for a laptop without a dedicated card, wouldnt be an optimal solution for me.

The root of the issue with my m15x is that the displayport doesn't work with my Samsung 305T as the displayport evidently doesn't support dual link.

I tried two brands of active adapters, and spent a few hours on the phone with Dell lvl 3 support, only to be told it was a hardware issue.

At this point I may just look into an M17x R4 or M18x R2...

That's a shame. Why not game on the 1080p stock screen it is pretty nice. Or hook it up to a decent HD projector. Sell your screen and get one with the proceeds - it will be a better experience :) Screens are very much old hat (in my opinion anyways ;))

Your machine runs well and has a good spec. It cost you good money to get yourself a M17x R4 or M18x R2 even barebone along with a new processor that is decent ie at least a 2820qm or 3610qm+ to perform as well or better than the 920xm at full stretch.

I have an old m15x which I would like to drive 4 external screens plus the build in screen. Can the ViDock 4 with a Nvidia 560Ti work?
