Should of come to the forum earlier and see both GTX260m overheating thread. To remind myself that I need to re-paste new thermal paste and clean my fans.

After heavy dota2 and kingdom of Amalur, my m15x meltdown yesterday, the GPU and motherboard are gone. :( :( :(

Dell paste gone within 18 months, but I guess it's my own fault didn't clean the fans for the last 6 months.

Fortunately still in warranty and Dell technician is coming over to fix it....

I want to take this "opportunity" to do some minor(thermal pads) and maybe serious upgrade (GTX 560m) when the computer is back into shape.

    Questions:
Mexic00ls suggested in this thread thermal pad questions to get Fujipoly product, but I can't find any reseller or anyone selling it in the UK? Is anybody bought this before? Or is there an good alternative that I can buy from the UK? If not, I might need to call their HQ up and see...

To double-click, I can put the pad on Vram and my memory? not on CPU or GPU die, Is this correct?

what do u mean by meltdown? o_O

btw about thermal pad u can get 3M thermal pad, it's easier to get, and the quality is quite good.. and yes u put it on vram chip not on the die..

i also suggest u to get a good quality thermal paste, since dell one is just generic quality...

the laptop was going max. speed for 10-11 hours straight, then it just turn itself off. Then I smell something was burning, from the battery, and GPU.

When I took the computer apart, there is some kind of "yellowish?" liquid around GPU die as well as the burnt smell ....

    Can't startup the computer anymore....

Thank you otosan, Will sure get some from 3M!

Keep us posted - sounds like your CPU might have survived, though it doesn't sound good for the motherboard and GPU. Few stores, even here, carry the pads, so most of us have had to order online - I don't know if the FrozenCPU folks would ship to you, but you might ask, if you can't find good pads close to you. There is lots of discussion about thermal compounds here - Arctic MX-4 is usually easy to find, and seems to be good - but there are lots of others.

    Good luck,

    Joe

    Thank you Joe!

Replaced battery, GPU and motherboard. Booted up and realize my CPU fan is actually not working (weird). But everything else is working now :) :)

Ordered some MX-4, and pad from FrozenCPU...Hopefully it will be here soon :)

Just waiting to get the CPU fan sorted now

Glad to hear your machine is back "among the living" Someone here may know where to get another fan (oh, that's right, you are still under warranty.. :)). If you watch temps very closely, you might get way with running in stealth mode - but probably better not to risk it..

    All the best,

    Joe

i think your fan was got problem since beginning that's why your m15x melt down, i just can't imagine what temp it was run till it so hot that it actually melted. o_O

my 920xm only hit arround 80 (or maximum 90) when loaded up, and GPU now never even hit 80, it just float arround 70 when loaded and 45 when normal... My fan is controlled using hW64 custom auto fan setting, thus it will speed up the RPM when my things start hitting 60 degree,

i suggest u also install it to control your fan, else, it just gonna happen again...

Got all sorted now, system back on and running :) FINALLY!

otosan: But how come CPU is not damaged at all? But GPU is gone?

Somehow HW64 can't pick up my fan, so I cannot setup fan speed, but idle 52-55C and full load 70-73C. I am happy now :)
