So I bricked my g73 and with the pia to teardown and it's out of warranty, I saw a deal on craigslist to check out.

I've quietly contemplated going to a m15x the last year.

    I3 but I already have a 920xm
    Already own ssd, ram, etc.

So its the 1600x900 screen and has a 5700 series ati. Will check out publicly tomorrow. Will check if still under warranty.

Is there any certain issues to check for? Like g73 has oddities with touch pad pre mod and more. If it runs fine I think this is a good deal.

How's the 900p screen compare to the 1080? I assume a g73 5870 won't fit due to asus cutting corners and having a wider form factor. And I'd upgrade down the road to a 7970m

Just wondering from a possible new aw user.

Honestly, at this point, I wouldn't bother.

A 2nd tier IB CPU can match what the 920XM can do, but with way less power and heat. After you spend the money on the M15x, and then the 7970m, you could just buy a new machine with the same level of performance and a better screen.

$600 is a tad much for the M15x with just an i3. Tell the seller to keep the i3 and drop the price at least to $500.

I haven't got the 900p so can't comment but the 1080p screen is very nice. If you keep the 900p then a 560M/6970M are affordable $250 options. You would be able to play any game well at this reso on these cards.

For $700-750 you could have a very decent machine to game at 900p! I don't think you could buy a brand new machine with i7 3610 (minimum cpu needed to keep up with the 920xm) and similar powered GPU for that price.

If the screen is good enough. Perhaps you can have a look at it? Plus if you intend to stay at 900p and not upgrade then the M15x is a pretty good option. If you end up upgrading the screen too then things start to get towards the expensive side of things...

One other thing you can of course part out and sell the old cpu and gpu yourself which will help keep the cost of a new gpu upgrade down too.

Bottom line is try to keep the cost of the machine plus any upgrades to under $800 (including the proceeds from old parts). If you can and perhaps even find a 1080p screen within this price range + old part proceeds then you have yourself a deal. The M15x is a great old school machine. High build quality, longevity via upgradeability and good cooling. It is pretty funky looking but then again your old G73 is more like it then the sober looking sager's so I guess that won't be a problem for you. Lastly the 920XM isn't as hot as people think. My chip runs at around 40C idle temp during the now summer ambient temp of nearly 30C and high humidity of Japan. For simple tasks and intensive web browsing and music listening/media functions this will go up about 5-10C. Not that bad at all really...

I would offer $500~, but m15x's with I3's are still selling for $600+ online so that is about fair if the system is in good shape. You already have a ton of parts to upgrade with so you can not go wrong with a m15x.

Thabks for the replies guys. I still want to go to a r2 especially with my parts and upgradability. And the build quality is a beautiful thing. Maybe it's the metal with the chassis..

Decided to hold off a few weeks, I really do want the 1080p screen. I've used m4400s with a 1200p on 15incher fine.

And the 800 mark with upgrades is great advice. I'm going to plan out more so see about hitting that point with 1080, odd caddy, psu; and gpu upgrade. Albeit the high premium on the 7970m it still specs out as on hell of a beast.

Edit: well, going to get it. 550 and has 1 year warranty left with accidental - that right there is pretty awesome!

Yeah that is not too bad at all, enjoy it!
