    Hi gents need some help

Got a second hand m15x i7 4gb ram 260m card it's running super slow it won't open Web pages or upload new drivers. Did a memory text and got error code 2000-0123. Guessing this is the problem anyone know what that is? Also noticed the cpu is running at 80% and nothing is really running.

    Any help greatly appreciated

My first step would be to open it up and blow all of the dust out of the heat sinks. Then remove the ram, clean the contacts and reseat it. That may help the memory problem. If not, you may want to try swapping the ram to see if you have a bad card.

You will probably want to pick up copies of HWInfo64 and Throttlestop. Former will give you good basic information on configuration and current temps. Throttlestop is useful even if you don't want to overclock, for maximizing performance. Lots of help is available here. BTW, which i7 do you have?

You should probably re-install Windows 7, especially with a used laptop. Back up any data you may have on there first. Also as mentioned by jdpurvis, you may want to re-seat the RAM or try one RAM stick at a time. Could be that one (or both) sticks are bad. Also make sure that you are running the latest A09 BIOS.

You will need a Dell Windows 7 Installation DVD to install Windows again. Check with the person you bought it from; maybe they still have it.

To check the BIOS version, press F2 on startup and it will tell you on the main screen. A program like CPU-Z or HWinfo will also tell you.

If you can find a Dell OEM ISO you can reinstall Windows 7 without having to enter a key.

FYI - with a quad core i7, m15x can accept 16 GB ram. Bios will show no Ram, but Win will find it all. However, I would sort the bios/OS issues before upgrading to 16 GB. You should be able to get bios 09 from Dell web site.

    Thanks for all your replys

I have downloaded Bios A09 is it as easy as moving the Bois onto a flash disk and booting from that? I have cleaned out all the fans and they work fine. Looking to pick up a copy of Win7 today, is it as easy as just booting the disk or can i download it online?

You can use any USB flash drive.

1- Download Rufus ( https://rufus.akeo.ie/) and format the disk using the default settings
    2 - Download the A09 BIOS ( http://downloads.dell.com/bios/R293649.exe)
3- Run the executable and extract it to the flash drive when prompted.
4- Shut down and press F12 at the splash screen for the boot menu. Choose the USB flash drive from the menu.
5- When it boots to FreeDOS, type: cd M15R1A09 and press enter.
6- Type: F and press enter. The flashing should start.

When you have finished installing your OS, I suggest downloading all the latest security updates and drivers and then create an image of your installation with a program like Easeus Todo Free ( http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm).

    Morning gents

Firstly thanks for all your help so far :)

Well last night I updated to BIOS A09, my M15X does seem to work better now. Web pages open and the systems seems more responsive however it still fails to run games.

Tried 2 last night Civ 5 running at low settings was very slow, jumpy and unplayable.
League of legends did play but loaded slowly and when running kept freezing for a second or 2, low setting again nothing to do with internet lag my internet is fine.

Could this be a graphics card issue? Running i7 M620, 260M card, 8gb RAM. I have all the latest drivers ETC

    Any ideas im still stuck

Check your hard disk for errors. Overall slowness can also be caused by a failing hard drive. I would download HDtune and run an error scan. If it checks out fine, I would format and reinstall the OS.

If disk is ok, I would get a copy of THrottlestop (Thanks again, UncleWebb) and see what your cpu is actually doing. latest version is 8.20, and there are links and a lot of information on how to use it in the Hardware forum at top of forum page (there is a very long thread there). It is possible that you could be stuck in some sort of mode with turbo disabled. [I assume you have already checked to be sure you are not in Stealth mode, and have checked in Task Manager to be sure Windows is seeing both of your cores.] You should also be sure to check that you are not in a power saving mode (should be set to 100%/100%).

    Best,

I7 620M is basically an i5. I would recommend picking up a used gcn or kepler based card for a massive boost on the gpu and a 920xm for double the cpu power. You could probably upgrade the pair at 200-250 total

I updated the BOIS to A9, did nothing. I re-installed windows 7 and the problem has been solved. Now looking at some of the upgrade options as discussed in this thread.

Once again, thanks for all your advice and helping me to get my laptop running again
