device manager under network adapters, find and go here for the latest driver.

    Drivers & Downloads

then try reinstalling the driver for it.

    -take battery out
    - press and hold power button for 20 sec.
    then put everything back.

The driver you downloaded is for a wired network adapter. You should have either an Intel 5300 or Dell 1520 WLAN (wireless) adapter. One of those should be present in Device Manager/Network Adapters. Right click on it and click Properties. It should tell you that the device is working properly or is disabled. If disabled, then enable. Otherwise, exit. If neither is present, then check you invoice or original configuration data, download the appropriate driver and install it. If that does not result in an automatic connection, go to Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center and then cliick on Set up new connection . . . and then click Connect to Internet and follow the prompts.

sorry i didn't see this earlier, but this is not correct. you should either have a 1520 half mini card or the intel 5300 for your wireless card. take a look at your invoice it should have a list of all your components.

oops the rev beat me to it, heheheh

    *Casts Thread Necromancy*

Hope that's ok; I always prefer to use an existing thread rather than make my own superfluous one.

I'm experiencing this exact problem. I've had my M15x since last September and never had a problem with the wireless before. Now, however, I can't find any wireless networks etc. I have tried doing the power drain, uninstalling wireless drivers, reinstalling them, disabling and enabling the device and so fourth. Also I've tried using the wireless touch button but that doesn't really seem to do anything.

I did have my screen replaced a few months ago and I'm not sure if I've used the wireless since then, so I'm wondering if maybe the guy dell sent screwed something up (he didn't really seem to have any experience with an alienware laptop or anything, and was pretty much working off the manual, and doing almost exactly what I would have done if they'd just sent me the screen - eg. mostly working it out as you go along, so I wasn't too happy with that :/). Not sure what I should really do. I do not want to just scapegoat the guy though, who did do his job ok as far as I can see. It's a possibility but I don't want to discount everything else and just focus on blaming dell when it could be something I could fix at this end y'know.

Any advice would be much appreciated. You all have always been very helpful.

    Thanks again,

    -Poobs

Edit: just wanted to add. I've managed to get a signal with my laptop basically right next to the router. It was reporting a measly 1 bar. At christmas I could get 5 bars at the bottom of the garden or in the room of the house farthest from the router.

I'm speculating here Poobah, but the antenna wires for the wireless cards run inside the lid behind the screen. I would suspect that the antenna wires were disconnected during the screen replacement, and the tech forgot to reconnect them. The M15x Service Manual shows the location of the antenna cables (2 or 3, depending on wireless card used) connector. That would be my first area of investigation.

I got mine with the same problem right out of the box. I called Alienware and this is how I fixed it.

Plug your laptop into a LAN connection so you can get on the internet.

Go to the "Device Manager" in the control panel.

Find your wireless card under network adapters.

Right click and go to "Properties.

Under the tab Driver click "Uninstall".

Now shut down the system and do a power drain.

when I turned it back on Windows saw a "Unknown Device", Downloaded the right driver and fixed it automatically.

The Alienware tech said if windows does not see the "Unknown Device" after the reboot you have to open the system and reseat the wireless card after you do the power drain. The wireless card is really easy to get to, It's under the keyboard.

hope this helps and works for you.
