So i just bought a m15x and the person i bought it from didnt list the specs, so i bought a ps of 150watts. i tested the laptop and the lights turn on and it sounds like its gonna power up but it turns off and stays on a loop trying to turn on but powers off..

I decided to take it apart and apply thermal paste as it may have been bad but i noticed it had a 920xm cpu and a amd 7970 so i am thinking it might be the ps as i may need more than 150watts.

So any ideas on what it is?

It still wouldn't do that unless the psu wouldn't even supply let's say 65W... which i hardly doubt... did you buy it as faulty? otherwise just contact the seller.

You didn't test when you bought? Did you buy it in person or online?

You cannot run without cpu or gpu.

Contact the seller and see if you can return it for a refund. Sounds like faulty mobo or PSU. Have you tried on just the battery (if it isn't dead)

it wont boot, but you can try removing the gpu to see if it will still be stuck in reboot cycle... if not, it's either the GPU or mobo.

Edit: charged the battery and the leds came on saying cpu not detected resitted cpu and it turned on..

But then it gave me another led error saying graphics card keeping it from booting up i already ordered it and ill install it tuesday and let you guys know just incase someone has same problem..

Have you checked for damaged or bent pins on the cpu? I recall having this same issue once on mine a while back but I can't remember what caused it. I think I fixed it by reseating everything (RAM, CPU, GPU) and clearing the BIOS (unplug coin cell battery). I don't recall having any bad components on mine back then.

You may also want to try using one DIMM at a time to eliminate bad RAM if you are using two sticks.

Probably a bad video card. My 7970m died on me as well. I'm running a Firepro m6000(Radeon 7870M) and it works great. Not the same performance as the 7970m but can be easily overclocked and runs cool in the M15X.

the 4870 doesnt work in M15x, i can confirm that, the colours will be all messed up, and if the gpu is faulty the laptop doesn't post or even trips the AC when plugged in.
