I have one of the old M15x's, with the silver ripley design. About a month ago it's stopped working, when trying to power it on the screen stays black. It doesn't look like any light goes on the screen, it doesn't get any brighter if you will. The keyboard backlights and stuff start up, but the screen doesn't change. What's the easiest way to find out what the problem is?

I'm planning on getting a male-male DVI-HDMI adapter to plug it into my LCD monitor, which I think is the right kind of adapter.

If it's a dead graphics card would the best thing to do be to sell the parts separately on ebay like I've seen before, since it's way out of warranty?

the motherboard on that m15x should have integrated graphics right?? if so take the graphics card out and start it up. if it fixes it then its your graphics card. if not then it could be your motherboard

If you point a flash light(or a source of light) at it do you see anything on the screen? Could be the screen too (i.e. inverter..)
Try plugging a external monitor and see if you get any output.

    Cheers

I think it has that battery saving thing where it can run in integrated graphics, so taking the graphics card out wont hurt? (It's 8700m GT)

Also the flash light doesn't help it's still pitch black.

Edit: Also would this http://www.amazon.com/External-Port...5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1319452956&sr=1-5 be able to be hooked up to the m15x's 160gb 7200rpm hard drive so I can get my stuff off it?

And would this http://www.amazon.com/Eforcity-Blac...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1319452027&sr=1-3 work for the monitor, I don't know if you need to know what kind of monitor I have but is it the right type of adapter eg male-male?

in theory that would work for the monitor assuming it has DVI instead of HDMI in on it. Many newer monitors have HDMI.

Ok apparently my monitor supports HDMI too so I just bought an hdmi cable and that adapter, so hopefull within a week I'll find out of it's just the monitor or not

    Thanks :|

Also I don't know if this is how it works, but if I turn it on, all I have to do to turn it off is to press the power button, not hold it down, just press it. If I'm not mistaken, this wouldn't turn it off instantly if the machine had booted to the OS login, so does it seem like there is a CPU/Motherboard problem and not a graphics card problem?

My friend's Asus laptop had its GPU fry and showed a lot of the same symptoms. Did you have instability issues before hand (computer crashing during gameplay)? I don't want to try to advertise here, but I might have an ATI Radeon 5870m to sell if that is of any use to you. Your laptop sounds old, there's a good chance this card wouldn't work.

I don't think it's the GPU because the integrated intel card doesn't work either. Also the 5870 won't work with this model, and I won't be spending the money for a new graphics card or motherboard either, it would probably cost me more than I could get for it fixed.
