Hmmm, Looking to purchase an extra adapter for my M15X and at the DELL store, the M17X 240W and the M15X 150W adapters are at the same pricing.

Link: AC Adapters : Adapters : Power: Batteries and More | Dell

Does Getting the 240W adapter works on the M15X?, and if it does, will it give Overclocking headroom for the 920/940XM Processor... Increasing TDP limits?

    EDIT:

You won't fry the M15x if you use the M17x AC Adapter.

When the output DC voltage is the same and the output DC current is equal to or greater for the 2nd AC adapter versus the AC adapter currently being used, you will be fine.

But I dont think the M15x will actually draw more than 150W out of that adapter. In the BIOS it is set to accept only 150W, I believe, so getting a bigger power adapter wont work unless you somehow modify the values in the BIOS to accept >150W.

If someone can confirm this though.....

Hmmm, so even if it draw out the same 150W... wont it be better since the Pricing is the same to get the 240W? Anyone wanna advice on this?

I have been using a 240 watt psu for a few months now, pretty much been using it daily when I'm at work. Just need to disable the psu warning and your good to go. I've seen both psu max out around 185 watts during heavy benching. I just like using it because it stays cooler when I'm benching, the 150 gets too hot when benching.

I think that was electrosoft video of the M15x running furmark + prime. Pretty much pushing the system to the max.

Yeah, that was my video. Some didn't believe the system could pull that much, but that is a combination of heavy load plus heat loss. For heavy use/benching, go with a 240w if you don't mind the size. You will peak around 185w.

I was going to sell my M15x, but then lowball offers + WoW Xpac changed my mind....especially when WoW ran like absolute crap on my E6410 w/ a i7-640M and Nvidia 3100 even at 1280x800. I had to scale down most everything to get an inconsistent 30fps. Glad I kept it.

My adapter it cannot provides enough power for my m15x anymore so I decide to buy a new adapter. So can I use M17X/R1/R2 or R3 adapter?

Thanks for answering my quyestion :D

yeah if your m15x 150w power unit is failing, than yeah you can use the m17x 240w unit. At boot it will display that you are not using the right power unit, but it will allow you to change the boot setting for use of the 240 adapter

If you use the M15x adapter it shouldn't damage the system, but it the system needs more power than it provides, your system will just be slower than it should be.

Using most dell ac adapters is fine. 90-240 watt ones are all fine for the alienware m-15x. you can use 65 watt ones too, but they wont charge your battery.

Hey, I'm looking at getting a 240W Adapter for my M15x as a spare for my older, 150W adapter, which runs very hot and constantly worries me that it will explode while running my 940XM and 6970M. Do you think the upgrade is worth it? I found one for $50-60s, however, I am unaware of the potential benefits or voltage/power issues with using one with a much higher W. Can someone help me out? Thanks.
