    Hi everyone,

I rarely post here but I read with a lot of interest.

I read the articles about putting a 580m in a m15X or the 6990. Considering the release of the tests of the brand new GTX-680 and the lower power consumption over the 580, do you think we will be able to see a 680m in the old m15X ?

I would love to be able to upgrade my 460m with this card.

    Cheers

    John San

    Eh! Already released?

The answer if the card is standard MXM 3.0 B then potentially. Somebody simply needs to try it out.

How much lower power is it?

Anandtech says it might be close to 100W

In the higher end pretty much just rebadges. Yet to see the 680M release. The 660M is the only interesting chip. Perhaps a good upper mid range upgrade for many in our M15x with low power consumption.

If the 680M ends up being a 28nm kepler then the power consumption could be lower

I have read a lot here about the 580m and the 6990. I want to upgrade my current 460m but it seems no high end GPU (above mentioned) seem to fit properly in the laptop unless you tweak a lot the hardware/software.

I don't want to mess up too much with my baby as I am afraid to break something. I already removed the DVD drive to replace it with a SSD and man... it took me 3 hours to dismantle the beast and reinstall everything.

I was hoping that with the lower power consumption, it would be possible to use it. But just like you say, we are yet to see a 680m... not yet announced by nVidia.

Yes I think you are better off waiting for the 680M and amd 7xxx series cards to arrive. Newer manufacturing processes ought to bring better power consumption for sure.

If not on the highest end chips you ought to be able to get 6990M and 580M performance at a lower tdp from the new low highend chips.

If the 6990M gets a die shrink and becomes the current 6870! and the 580M becomes the current 570M with 75W tdp goodness the M15x will be happier :)

It can handle the 6990M but pretty much only at stock clocks and undervolt. The cooling just isn't sufficient as the heatsink is tiny.
