I want to upgrade a few things on my rig to get better preformace while gaming.

    I curently have 4gig DDR3 1333 and a lousy GT 240M graphics card.

When I play crysis there is quite a bit of lag and is very choppy.

What should be upgraded to take care of this issue?

    Thanks!

for gaming i recommend upgrading the graphic card.

460m if you want to stick with nvidia or ati 5850 which alot of people prefer.

ati 6970 does work also but not official supported by dell. but is a monster of a card.

An Alienware M15x is a highly upgradeable machine and with a few upgrades, it'll last very well for at least 3 years more IMHO. You can go for the 460M upgrade or for a 5850 upgrade. But 5850 is not widely available and with nVidia's super drivers support, I feel that 460M is a super card and it is alongside a 5850 performance-wise.

If you can, I would suggest go for a 920/940XM Upgrades as well because it highly improve the overall oomph factor of your system and it'll give your system a high resale value as well. Any other processor upgrade is not justified I feel and they are not overclockable using Throttlestop. A XM can be used to run at 3.5 GHz at all 4 core and not even the newer SB platform can match these feats except for 2920XM ofcourse.

That being said, you can go for the Dell upgrades directly as they will give you warranty for the parts as well. If you want to go a cheaper route, I've a 940XM and 460M for sale for the CHEAPEST price on the Internet and if you are interested, you can follow the link in my sig and I'll give you a combo discount as well... It's totally your call though and I don't want to force anything. But if I were you, I would upgrade that 240GT asap because a card like that no longer belongs in an Alienware...no offence buddy..just an honest opinion.

    Peace.

please do not purchase anything from sgt. he was banned from selling by NBR moderator Charles P. Jefferies.

he has zero feedback and tries to get people to pay via western union to an overseas account. not saying he is a scammer but everything points in that direction.

Who are you to justify that? Did I ever ask you for a WU payment? And even if I did, it is your decision that matters, doesn't it?

You try to help people with top-notch goods for a throw away price and this is what you get. F :(£ing AWESOME..!!! thanks NBR.

Agree with Inap -- a graphics card upgrade is the most direct and cost efficient path to improved gaming performance. And the Dell 5850M is the preferred route for most gamers. The Nvidia 460M is a nice card and has some advantages in particular uses which employ CUDA (you'd know if you need it) or PhysiX (used by a (very) limited number of games). But the 5850M is significantly faster. Claims that the 5850M and 460M are "roughly equal in gaming" or words to like effect can be disposed of by reference to the leading synthetic benchmarks. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...5x-benchmark-thread-part-2-a.html#post6781257. The top 5850M scores in 3dMarkVantage and 3dMark11, the currently relevant tests, are conservatively 20-25% higher than top 460M scores. The problem with the Dell 5850M is that's its popularity and the cessation of M15x manufacturing had made them pretty scarce. Your best bet is to get Dell to sell you one as an upgrade. The other alternative is the 6970M, a pure beast and a major upgrade to the 5850M, but it is expensive, not covered by warranty in a M15x and requires some experienxe to install and configure properly in an M15x. Get a 5850M if you can. The performance increase over the 240M is astounding.

    now he sends this....

Well, I'm sorry if I was harsh and we can work out a Deal here. I'll give you both the parts for $700 and you can send me the paypal payment. In case I try to screw you up, you can contact paypal because they have my residential address, my bank accounts and my social security number. You can have them put me behind bars if you want.
In return, I want you to contact forum mods and help be out with these ban. You can have a 940XM and 460M dirt cheap if you still wish it. What say?

if he is from the UK originally then why would he have a social security number????
received this message from him yesterday.

    "Hi there,

I am currently working in India but I am from UK basically. I wouldn't mind giving both to you for $700 but the shipping of electronic goods here in India is insanely high. It'll cost me minimum of $70 to have it shipped to you. If you could cover the charges, I'll give it to you for $770. Best deal I can offer right now my friend.

    Sorry."

Hello jmooner976! I was thinking on doing an upgrade also and decided to go with the GTX 460m with an offer Sgt. made me. I posted the quotes that Dell offered to me just in case you want to buy the cards from them. Here is a link to the thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/578047-gpu-upgrade-nvidia-460m-vs-amd-5850-a.html

Also, they will charge you if you want it installed by a Dell technician or you could do it yourself at your own risk.

Hey wB'! I recently bought one of Sgt.'s card and although I have not received it yet I can tell you that the payment was done through PayPal. If anything goes wrong there is the PayPal Resolution Center. We have been comunicating by e-mail and he responds quick (taking into consideration the different time zones). I'll keep the forum posted on the thread I started and hopefully nothing will go wrong :)

Can you give me the link to where it's stated that he was banned form selling?

I actually read the whole 940xm selling thread and yeah.... he sold it per Western Union, but nobody says you have to buy per WU if you don't like it. And it seems to have worked out well. (Of course it could've been a fake but... well there's always a risk involved when buying stuff online in this way.)
He's currently offering a 940xm and 460m for a great price... and he's offering PayPal for payment afaik.
I know his first sell might have been better, but I think it's unjust to blame Sgt. without any solid evidence of fraud... It's always up to the buyer to decide whether he want's to buy it per WU or not...

I just think it's unfair to denounce another member while trying to sell the same stuff yourself.

I'm not sure about how safe paypal for buyers actually is... I mean that's not an official online shop and if you get screwed I guess you have a hard time to get your money back... it's not that easy to proof.

Anyway, it's your right to have your own opinion about Sgt., but nevertheless it's not a reason to post such flaming stuff imo. You may have some points, but if there was a real issue he would've been banned quite a while ago.
Imo there have been some misinterpretations with the sales of Sgt. and also some bad communication from his side, but as there isn't any wronged party (hope that's the correct word) it's not very fair to say he's a bad seller.

Anyway, just my 0.02 and I might be wrong... I haven't bought anything from him, but your reaction just seemed to be a bit extreme to me.

    Sorry, back to topic.
@OP: A GPU upgrade will help you a lot and will bring back your M15x to great performance. 460m and 5850 are very good options, 6970m is simply amazing.

    I know the 5850 is highly overclockable but it's not faster than a 460m by 20-25% ;) 8900 vs 10500 vantage gpu

    What is this..???

Sorry OP if this thread has gone way off-topic. :D
Everyone has the right to hold their own opinions. I've never cheated anyone in my life and this is what I get for helping NBR community for selling cheap parts supposedly. For your info, I was banned for selling parts for too less a price and no cheating complaint has ever been made against me. WOW...unbelievable.

    @chinopr:

Don't worry about this bro...you'll get your 460M within a week and I hope you enjoy it. ;)

@svl: you said it and I appreciate it. Thanks.

@wB: man, get a life...a REAL one. I mean who wouldn't be pisses when someone's calling you a fraud while you are trying to help them.

@OP: Get a GFX card upgrade from dell themselves...it's nice to be on their warranty policy.

If you get the 460m I'd beware of your CPU holding you up. Which one do you have? I have the GTX 460m and was horrendously limited by my CPU, which is the i7-740qm. The clock speeds are severely limited, and OCing really isn't an option. But I digress. Upgrading to a better graphics card would definitely benefit you. At the same time I hope your CPU isn't going to be holding you back.

Actually I really beg to differ. The i7-740qm is nowhere near a bottleneck for modern games. I monitored CPU activity when I had a 720qm with a 460m GTX card and CPU never went over 80% in any games. Modern quad cores will never bottleneck a laptop GPU. Especially an i7 with Hyper-Threading.

^^^ are you using a Dell OEM 460M. If yes, then the CPU is not holding back your OC levels. Actually the truth is Dell has undervolted the card to .9V and this has limited significance in OC. You won't see a Dell's card going beyond 750 core MHz whereas Clevo's 460M and all other 460Ms out there can pretty much easily OC to 830MHz.

Dells to blame here...not the CPU. Just my .02

I have both - I had a Clevo one and my brother has a Dell one now, I had them OC'd various degrees up to 800 core with both CPU combinations (Clevo+720qm/740qm, Dell+720qm/740qm). Made no difference at all. My point is that the CPU will never hold a GPU back.

Well everyone will have different experiences. I for one have never had any CPU hold my performance back in a game. I have never seen the CPU pegged at full during a game. The GPU is doing it's thing and the CPU is happily providing the info.
