At least a 210W PA7E adapter, but you are better off with a slim 240W adapter. @deadsmiley says that the slim 240W adapter eliminates throttling issues without any further mods so hopefully he'll chime in but I think that's the way to go. Plus the 210W adapter is huge while the slim 240W is, well....slim :)

This has been my experience with 3 M15x machines. I shipped my daughter's machine with a 150w PSU and she isn't overclocking her CPU. She probably should be!

would an SSD really make enough difference to matter? i have one in my main tower and it really doesnt go much faster than my laptops in terms of data access speeds

how about fan control mods and overclocks?

920/940XM should run 25-25-25-25 without difficulty, but they will get quite hot. SSD definitely. I can't believe you're still using a spinner in a laptop.

It's not going to be as fast as a pure SSD, but it will help speed up boot times and loading of frequently used apps over time.

You need to be a bit patient with an SSHD. It takes a few cycles to write the commonly used files to the fast NAND portion of the drive. So at first after loading Windows, boot times might be slow, but after a few reboots, the drive starts determining which files are commonly accessed and throws those files in the NAND portion, improving access times. The same applies to apps.

I have one in my M11X and it does help. It's not nearly as fast as my SSD but it is still noticeable. It's a good compromise if you need lots of space and can't afford a big capacity SSD.

OK got the SSHD running and its a nice increase in speed.

I got my 240 charger and a new battery however the battery is not charging, how would I go about checking the charging components internally on the laptop?

I had to turn off A/C Warning in the BIOS to get my batteries to charge.

I would like to reinforce that overclocking the CPU is more important that overclocking the 970M. Stock clocks on the CPU will starve the GPU.

deadsmiley - I have to ask: Exactly which charger are you using? Where can it be bought? Has anyone else experienced NO throttling with this, or will it eventually throttle when you overclock the cpu to like 25x across all cores and game away?

Not sure. Hopefully @deadsmiley will chime in. That adapter you got looks like mine but with an extra 30W of power.

EDIT: Btw, you said earlier that your battery wasn't charging. You didn't pull the center pin off the adapter by any chance did you? Pulling that center pin will eliminate throttling but you won't be able to charge your battery. That's why getting a right angle adapter and pulling the center pin off that is recommended. That way when you need to charge, you remove the right angle adapter and plug the PSU directly.

I suspect it's the adapter then. If you have the stock 150W adapter, then it will confirm this. I remember a while back someone was reporting that the 330W adapter refused to charge batteries in the M15X, but I don't remember hearing anything about the standard (non-slim) 240W.

I would also do a full power drain and see if that helps (remove battery and PSU...hold down power button for ~15 seconds).

And make sure you are on the latest BIOS (A09).

EDIT: Also make sure battery charging is enabled via the FN+F2 keyboard combo.

I have never had the original power cord. Bios is current and did power drain as you said. I am fine with buying another adapter but want input on exactly what one this time so i dont make another mistake

I can confirm that the 210W PA7E does charge the battery.

Check Inap's post below. Might do the trick:

That looks exactly like the one I have.

EDIT: Actually mine does not have the "DELL" imprint on the top. Mine has a Dell part number of OPN402 on the label so it may be different than the one you linked. Actually mine reads 230W in the BIOS although the label states 19.5V 10.8A output which is 210W.

EDIT AGAIN: Added a couple of pics for you. P1020275.JPG P1020276.JPG

It should just be a plug and play upgrade as long as it is a SATA interface. Just be aware that lots of these internal Blueray drives may not come with playback software to support Blueray playback. DVDs don't have this issue as pretty much any media player will play back DVDs, but this is not the case with Blueray.

Yeah that's the software that came with my Plextor external Bluray player. I hardly use discs nowadays though.

You can always get an external player and use the internal DVD slot for an extra hard drive for storage via an adapter (caddy).
