Im Currently trying to upgrade my 320g HHD to a 500g Seagate Momentus XT. I cloned the drives with Seagate disk wizard but when I try to boot the Momentus XT its not working. i talked to someone I know with one and the said they had the same issue and fixed it by changing something in the BIOS. i wanted to know if anyone could shed some light on what i'm doing wrong or of I need a driver or something?

This is not strictly on topic, but when doing a fresh install, you also need to reinstall microsoft office. It comes with 4 product-keys. Does this mean that after 4 fresh installs you have to go out and buy a new office key?

No. When you fresh install, install with your first key again. You can do this as long as your single key is for a single computer. 4 keys means it can be installed on 4 different computers. The number of times you use it doesn't matter.

I am not sure how to boot it while it was cloned since I did it the clean install ways. Yeah it took longer but it worked better for me. You may need to search online a but more to see but I am not sure. Sorry could not have been more help.

I used Acronis - the plus version allows backup and reconstruction on different hardware. It may be that the BIOS setting was AHCI - but I would expect your old disk also used that setting. It took a long time to create the backup and reconstruct the drive (several hours) because I used an external USB drive. However, the new drive booted and I did not have to reinstall any software. I did need to reinstall the sound driver, and some other drivers were also reinstalled.

I am coming to think that the stuttering may be software related, and not due to the drive - which currently seems stable.

    Good luck,

    Joe

You might have an issue with the DVD. After creating the bood DVD, I forced the machine to boot from the DVD (via F12), and then loaded Acronis and looked for the backup. If the DVD doesn't boot, that could be the source of the problem. Also it is only the plus version of Acronis that permits reconstruction to different hardware - I am not sure the regular version would work (even though the only difference is hard disk size).

Its not worth the pain and possibly future pain, back everything up and do a fresh install.

FYI - my stuttering problem turned out to be due to the NVidia driver - I found a post on the Nvidia board that suggested that earlier versions didn't do this. I switched and the stuttering went away. The new WHQL driver (170.61) works fine - no stuttering, and no problems with the drive.

One approach to your problem might be to do a fresh install - make sure the drive is working ok, and the system is stable. Once you're sure it works, you could try to clone to it. But make sure you've got a good backup of your present install.

    Good luck.
