Need some advice on an Alienware Mx15

I got this laptop in 2012.
It used to run a ton of stuff great, (Final Fantasy 14, Guild Wars 2, DotA2, Dawn of War 2, etc)
It still runs pretty well. FF14 used to run at 40ish fps and now drops to 14 frequently. All the other games are like that too. It used to get better if I would clean it out, (and sometimes resit the CPU) but now it seems nothing works.
I wonder if it is shot, or is there something I am missing? Is there something I can do, short of upgrading?

since youve already upgraded to ssd, what you can do is upgrade to a better cpu and more ram... 4gb is getting a bit low for todays needs. upgrade to 8gb is almost necesarry imho... gpu could use a bump, a 660M is great card and can OC as crazy from my experience while running really cool

With a 1st gen core i5, you are limited to 8GB RAM (2 X 4GB). Just search for DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM. The max RAM speed in the M15X is 1333MHz but you can always get faster modules and they will automatically downclock to the supported speed. One important thing is to try to get low density RAM as high density RAM does not play nice with the first gen core processors.

With the quad core processors, you can upgrade to 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB).

 

The dual core i7's only support 8GB as well. It is a bit nick picky I know, but I fell into the trap with my Precision M4500.
