    Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. I reinstalled windows 7 from the alienware disc that came with my laptop and it keeps asking me to activate windows via the product key which I don't have.

    Any ideas?

    Robbie

It's on the sticker on the back of the laptop.

You shouldn't have to activate. OEM companies like Dell use SLP keys with their products and should be imprinted in the restore media. The SLP keys in conjunction with the Dell BIOS should pre-activate your Windows installation right out of the box.

Are you sure you are using the right restore media? If you purchased Windows 7 Home Premium, the restore media should be for Home Premium, not Professional or Ultimate.

I keep saying that he shouldn't have to activate at all. There should be no prompts to activate what-so-ever. Something just doesn't read or sound right. To me, it looks like Dell shipped the wrong recovery disc for his notebook.

Now there is a way to get past all this hassle as there is a tool out there designed to fix SLP activations if OEM or Retail media is used (OPATool). However, if your restore media is not activating as it should, then a call to Dell/AW needs to be made to get the right restore media.

Sch3cter, there should be a part # on your Alienware restore disc. Can you provide that to us?

Yeah I have. It asks to activate online , when I click into it it asks for the key. The only other option is to activate by phone.

@ livid: It's P/N DRGYF is that right one?

Look at the sleeve that the disc came in. On the back of it will be the part #. If I think that's what I think it is, it could be a ReSpawn DVD which is not offered on the M15x.
